Collsn m record to the claims of this ottjr asatnat the Catn. Uadlan National Railway Editor, Dally Newa: 1 w very interested in the address ol the Hon. T. D. Pattullo to the Ro-tury Club last week. eapeciaUy In that part where he showed thai "many people had gone lnt the country served by the P.OZ. and It was unfair to these people to say the line would not ! completed." addlUK that the Dominion government ha a "moral obll-Ki'tion to help finishing the P.CE." In your editorial of lite loth Inst yvo also point out the necessity of finishing that Nad. and that has brought book to my mind eeitatn promises made to the people of this city promises whtoh brought them here as well as these promsMs trhtfen brought people Into the country served by the P.QE. Also certain optnraet between the O.T.P. and tb city of Pritx-e Rupert. A OQntrsel H a oontract and the party trying t get out of It is not what one would call acting honestly, the same applies to prtfmlsee whether they are made by a government or an Individual. , V.iMOI int HON' The Canadian Northern Railway bad an agreement wttb the eny of Vancouver to build an hotel and do certain work at Fatoe Oieek. Vancouver kept her end of the agreement but the Canadian Northern Railway went Into liquidation, being taken over by the Dominion government and afterwards by the Canadian Natloual Railway. They both were forgetting the agreement they had taken over with the astets and HablHties ol tbe defunct Canadian Northern Railway, and Mayor Taylor, on behalf of the cUjr of Vancouver, got a summons tented on the Canadian National RaUway for non-fulfillment of contract. The re-sun of It waa that the railway came to terms and Vancouver won her oate out 3f court. Tbe G.TJ. had an agreement with the buUdess of the P.O.E.. but the a.TJ". went into liquidation and was taken over by the Dominion government and the Canadian National Railway, a se similar to tbe obve. They have a moral ; obligation to help complete that line. All that is only fair and nobody should take exception to It. so that -well established, let us look a little nearer home and see about the situation as regard the Dominion, governmiht and the Canadian NatUgk)(Rallway and this II It ST I'KOMIsCK At the first auction sale of Prince Rupert lots in 1909 in Vancouver, In order to Induce the people to pay big price for the lots, and to get them to locate in Prince Rupert. Mr. Miller, the nurttoneer. made the mtement before the sale tbat the d.TP. was going to build a big hotel at Prince Rupert, ths' certain Improvements were going to be made and also that a court bouse would be built by the provincial government. This we eventually got through the efforts of Mot. T. D. Pattullo. In 1910 the O.TJ". made an agree-nwnt with the city of Prince Rupert, whereas the a.TJ". was going to build a 92.000,000 hotel on Second Avenue, a station, rdundhouses. machine shops, etc., and the city of Prince Rupert re duced the tXes W the Q.T.P. to 15.000 a year. But the O.TJ. went Into liquidation before anything was done as regard the fulfillment of that agreement. The Dominion government took over the a.I. P. and the Canadian National Railway, successor to the Q.TP., never carried out Its part of the agree- n-.ent. , Of course I will admit that Sir Henry Thornton In 1924. when confronted with the old O.T.P. agreement declared before the; imayor and aldermeri of this city that a two million dollar hotel would be out of place In this city, put tna ne would build a hotel on the same lines as the Jasper hotel, at the foot of McBrlde Street and that he would ok the government to build two boats similar to the Prince Rupert to be put on the run between here and Alaska but he was careful to say that it all depended on the Dominion government and the trustee of the funds left by the defunct Canadian Northern Railway. MIIV Till: llllTKKKM'Kr Well. Sir, I would like to know why this difference between the city of Vancouver and the P.oj;. on the one hand and the city xf Print Rupert on the other hand, when It comes to an agreement with a railroad that has gone Into liquidation In both cases and taken over by the Dominion government and the Canadian National Railway. Is It because Vancouver is a big city or because the province has the P.Q.E. on Its hands? Because Prince Rupert Is ! small is that a reason why she should I not Insist on getting her dues as are II the people that came here under false pretences, not Just as Interesting as the people that went Into the country this city served by tlie P.a.E.T not Prince Rupert has plenty of her own the very problems to solve. Let us take stock of Thanking what li coming to us ana next year let of your us choose for mayor xt this city a man to some sufficiently Independent to be able to I beg devote most ttf his time to the welfare of the city, a man that will look around and see what Industries could be induced The to locate here, a man that will be hospital willing to fight the battle for the city the and get her dues, no matter against at the whom it will nave to be. a real leader; Neither that a what we need here at the pre- tan? improve Beautiful Silver for Xmas Our-loclv is lwttcr assorted this year than ever. -yc earsonly name a few pieees, hut come in and sec for yourself.
