DAILY EDITION Friday, August 19, 1827 PREMIER OLIVER So much has been written and itaid of the late Premier Oliver that It ia difficult to add anything- of importance. He waa a self-made man and ia spite of his irreat successes remained the name plain unassuming personage that in his earlier days presided over the farm household down in the Delta. Yet in spite of the fact that he could not be spoiled by success he took an immense pride in his work and gloried in the fact that he was able to do Homethinx worth while far hk pro vine nd through it for Canada. When it is understood what the conditions were under which Mr. Oliver took hold of affairs and the condition in which he left them, it is wasy to understand his occasional petulance when attacked at meetings by those who were so much inferior in intellect, in resourcefulness and in courage. He was intensely human, and trrk broad humanity was the means of carrying his Government back to newer again and again. History will place Premier Oliver high among the builders of Canada and his memory will be an inspiration to many young men and women anxious to serve their country. Nearly every woman has two good reasons for short skirts, but sometimes she has two good against it. AND WHAT OF THE FUTURE? "The King is dead! Long live the King!" Tho.e are the f anjiliar wor4of istary. Hsjmssea pnd aiio&er takes hold and carrje.?ne wore lonmra anotner stepr It was natural that under the influence of so etcong a personality the members of the Oliver cabinet should assume places in the background. They were all loyal to their leader and served him faithfully. Most of them were imbued with thv same ideals. One of the strong points about the late premier was that he kept around him strong men and he gave them full control of their several departments on condition that they make good in their respective roles. So there emerge Dr. J. D. McLean, now the acknowledged leader of the Liberal Government. Under him the party stands united as before and under him it seems probable much useful work will be done for the province. "Give McLean a chance" will undoubtedly be one of the slogans' -of the party now in power. He is a safe man, and one to be trusted. The next few months will tell whether" he has the hold on the party and the country that will enable him to carry on successfully. Happiness is the natural state. Unhappiness is the result of a defect in body or mind and often of both. ROAD QUESTION ONCE MORE The people of Prince Rupert are asked to study carefully the whols question of the highway to the interior. Thfs year it is to be supposed will see the completion of the road to Galloway Rapids and then there is a question as to whether the road should go to Port Edward, along back of the Port Edward townsite touching on , the chain Of lakes there, or turning toward Cloyah River nrfd Wark Canal.' The route is the first important thing to determine. We want the road aftd want it -badly, but it must go in the right direction so that-ljt will be a part of the main highway which is to give connection with the outside world. We suggest that the route advocated by R. II. Leighton be studied. Frankly we do not like it because it will take too long to construct. If there is to be a diversion to the Naas River, let it go by the most direct route including Terrace. However, the first thing to do is to locate the best route and then" stick by it. Remember, we have a niece of cnmnleted road in th wimAa nnnnaii n;.ri.,r iin,i - . ... - - - "I'j'vmn, a-' . vjj lotniiu which is a monument to some hasty politician who was determined A I . . .... . to ouiia somerning in answer to the demands of the populace. Let it be a lesson to us all. Proper plans mint precede construction. There is a destiny that shapes our ends. Yes, low forehead at one end and. corns at the other.
