FfgAf Into Cassiar Mining Kegwn and Iropical Valley Described by Colin Caldwell I - . .. . . in ine spring or rja, I joined the expedition of a syndicate of United States mining capitalists, for exploration work in the un-. explored regions of the Yukon and Northern British Columbia, as) assistant pilotmechanic, says an article in McLean's Magazine told to E. L. Chicanot by C. S. Caldwell, dealing with the latter'a flight in 1925 to the Cassiar district, incidentally this was. to the besi ; of my knowledge, the first mineral prospecting party to plan the use j of the aeroplane. Colonel Williams, who was in charge of aerial i transport and I appreciated quite keenly that the territory to be i town over wu Isolated. Urgrly unc plored. and but very Inaccurately map- ped. and realized the hazard and tUffl- tultle of aueh an expedition a we ere aettlng out upon. We dug up all the available data on the country but this was painiully fragmentary and it left us little better oS. The machine we were to fly. a Vlcaers Vlxing am phibian, was shipped by raU from Three Mirers. Quebec, to Prince Rupert. British Columbia, and we were there: ready, with the plane assembled, to commence our air trip on June 1. Al together we made a party of nine. We flew from Prince Rupert to Wran-i itJX Island where we refuelled, thence j directly over the coast range by waj of the Stlkine Valley, and on to Tek-grapn Creek. It was a route af exquisite wild toTeUness. as we ' sailed ore;1 tittering glaciers, high white-capped mountain peaks, and saw. the ribbons of Innumerable men winding below. We made a landing on the Stlkln River' and established camp there to await the breaking up of ice on Dease Lake On June IS word was receired that the ice on Dease Lake had broken up and on the following morning we made an early start with the entire outfit, consisting of four men. tents, dogs, and other equipment, to fly to our main base which was- to be located at 'the bead of Dease Lake. The distance from Telegraph Creek was more than seventy miles orer a country absolutely devoid of landing places. A forced landinz over this stretch of country would hare tpelt not only failure to the expedition but in all probability disaster to all of us. We had fortunately no such mishap and the entire miscellany was transported to the head of Dcase Like in forty-flTe minutes. Ours was the first machine ever to cross this height of land. An altitude of three thousand feet baring been maintained after leav- cg Telegraph Creek we found we were! only five hundred feet above water orer Dease Lake, as that Mdy !s Iocs tea wenty-flve hundred feet above sea kveL After having ascended three thou sand feet on the take-o3 we had to1 descend only five hundred feet to land. UKt; a hick ami ;ooE Our first trip from Deae Lake wa down the Dease Hirer a far as Vic ... Dames, where time Is a Hadsoa. Bay post and where .couple, of .mining cempatilc are engaged in dredging operations. This distance of ninety mues took up Just fifty minutes. We- found it finite impnuible to convince the Indians of this as It took them onr week to make the return trip. They plainly regarded the machine as some thing (habollcal and could not be In duced to approach closer than three hundred yards, while they seemed to bellere there was something super natural about us, "It Hies like a duck and lands like a got," on observing Indian put it. It was the sols topic of the tribes and fresh Indians came In from mile every day to vIPsv It. The younger set for long periods sedulously practiced the roar of the engine and with their arms Imitated the movement of the plane in turning and banking, evidently In order to be able to take back an accurate and convincing story to their brethren In the bush. miue it socLume we ensrtered a large scow capable of carrying five tons of supplies and bad the Indians brtcg n to the head of Dease Lake, where It was loaded with gasoline, supplies, and equipment and sent down the river to LUrd Post, kicsted at the Junction of the Dease and Uard Rivers. The trip by scow took twenty days- did It by plane in JutJ under three hours. uur ajrrtvsL at Llard cause excite menf enough, the Indians collecting on the river bank very much alarmed. One particularly wild-looking fellow Immedl-atHy started In a panic for the bush but as w circled preparing to land, the shadow of the machine Intercepted his flight. Terrified, he retururd, deciding the river was the safest retreat, and made tor it. Just as he got to the bank, however, he reallred we were landing iktre, and treuzledly:' turned again and plunged terror-stricken into he bush. He lay there for some while oefore slinking forth to secure his pall .-ifle and dog. and set about the con-.miction of a rude raft. That crenlnf je set out on a four hundred mu Iminw t V. I in , i 1 jf tbe fearsome thing which had ar rived. I still wander what happened to mm. i I'LICII.OI tl.lIMi WhUe the scow was en route, we trans- .Jorted the prospectors by air to artou -ocations. Considering all condition and tbe difficulties a forced landing would have put us in. It was not the safest kind of flytng to Indulge Is The scow eventually arrived on July 11 and the two redmen who had brought it down intended returning oa foot, a matter jal flte days and nights travel. As we were going back to Dease Lake and had to pass the Indian aunp we invited them to go along. At ilrst they would not consider It at all and so strong was their reluctance and so amusing to us the atutude of these two Indians who had piloted the dura scow down aU manner of rough water that we decided to persuade them to fly If we could. It was bard work. No me weak heart. You btg man. You strong heart." We at length managed to overcome this objection. Then it was "lie got dogs. Ho can take the air." . "Sure we can take them." I said. With excuses running out. they beaa to look shamefaced, and we summarfly bundled them In to the plane. We had seated them and got as far as putting helmets on their head and cotton wool In their ears whoa the nose of one of tbe two began to bleed proiuseiy. ibis was regarded as a very bad omen indeed and the trip was c early oc. However, more persuasive floqucnce and copious oold water pour' d down the back of the neck stopped tbe bleeding, and losing no more time we took 03. These two Indian would have thought nothing of running rapids with a few poles lashed together with moose hide strings, but the plane plain ly bad them terror stricken. As soon aa we left the water their bead disappeared fceneath the cockpit and they did not show again until after we had landed fifty, minutes later. It w&uld nave Taxen- tnem rive day to cover tba distance on foot. I will never forget titeir expressions as they tried to realtz Uie distance they had come. Yet great er. If possible, wsa tbe wonder and be wilderment of their friends who had congregated upon the bank to see the big bird land as they saw two of their own people emerge from tbe boweU of tbe monster 1 am sure tbey wouM either be chief next day or killed as wizards.
