MAKING OF GLUE FROM FISH AND DIFFICULTIES IN THE WAY LOCALLY OUTLINED BY WRITER (continued from page one) (tLt'EH IMPOKTEII It might be expected that Canada with her extensive fisheries would produce a large surplus ot this commodity, but such Is not the case, in fact In 1922 we Imported $76,000 worth ot liquid glue. $20,000 of which came all the way from Oreat Britain.' The reason for this shortage In our country la apparent when we find that no fish glue Is manufactured on the Pacific Coast In Canada, and that the fish glue makers of the Atlantic Coast only, have to attempt to supply all, our needs. In spite of the fact that every avail able fish skin on the Atlantic coast has been used for glue during the last few years, and further, that every fish ekln produced by the filleting Industry for the next five years ha been sold In advance to the glue manufacturers, we are still obliged to supply our need by Importing from other countries. With this ever growing demand, good prices and absence ot competition, the prospects of starting a fish glue Industry on this coast appear excellent. NO HAW MATERIAL There are, however, one or two obstacles to be overcome. The beat fish glue, as we have noted, are made from fish skins, a by-product ot the filleting Industry. We have no such Industry on this coast yet, and therefore no such source of raw material. Obviously skinning the fish merely to use the skins for glue, would not be. profitable. We have, however, large auppliei ot fish beads, tall, fins and other waste, from the salmon and halibut Industry: These at present are used In some places for the preparation of fish meal and fish oil. Experiments are being carried out at the Fisheries Experimental Station (Pacific) to obtain a method of extracting glue from thla waste. To be successful, this treatment must not be detrimental to the oil and meal which are manufactured at the present time, and at the same tune must permit the extraction of the highest quality of I glue possible. Results ot experiment I have ehown that these object are at-tigh rmi! mn work will I have to M d.me to make the proes Plain Mr. i. Says Plain Mr. York.: "To accomplish, this feat You'll find 'tuill be helpful if Plain York you II eat If it's not down in one You'll at least haie the fun Of enjoying Plain York. you udll find it a treat." Plain York adds to anyone's enjoyment of life for it is the finest chocolate life has to offer. A wonderful chocolate bar, not too bitter, not too sweet, the triumph of 200 years of fine chocolate making, Rowntree's Plain York chocolate is always better than par. Its velvety smooth truly chocolate taste will prove a really delicious treat- just try' it I 706 XBn commercially aucoeesful. EMiLlSlI .METHOD One baal for experimental work has been the method worked out In England during the last year or two whereby the fish waste there la made Into glue. The waste Is washed free from impurities first In dilute alkali, and then In dilute acid, heated below boiling and strained free of the liquor. Thla liquor when separated from the oil which floats on top, 1 a thin, light-colored, atlcky fluid which rapidly dries on the hand to form thin scales or I flakes ot glue. Evaporating this liquid dewn gives the ordinary liquid fl&h glue of commerce. 'Such a method modified to meet changes In the' raw material and operating' condition would solve the fish waste problem ot our coast, and the work at the Experimental Station will be largely investigating the Improvement and modifications necessary tor Its application to our salmon and halibut waste. It will In addition have to show, by large scale operations, the economic feasibility of the new method which It develop. COOKING IISII WASTE To understand clearly the difficulties which 'would attend this new proceas we must know the methods now in use. The fish waste Is collected In scows at the canneries, conveyed to the plant and emptied, by mean ot a bucket line conveyor Into cylindrical steam Jacketed cookers resembling locomotive boilers. The cookers are heated with steam under pressure for several hours. The mass when thoroughly cooked la transferred ! to a hydraulic or screw press and the liquid pressed out. The solid matter remaining 1 dried over steam colls with heated air. ground up and sold as stock or poultry food. The llqour which was pressed out from It Is boiled up for a few minutes, and aeparates into layers. The upper layer Is the fish oil which Is extensively usee In the tanning industry. The lower layer Is a mixture of dissolved proteins and salts, and corresponds to the glue layer in the modified process described above. It does Indeed contain a considerable amount of glue, but contaminated with many Impurities and permanently weakened by heating under pressure. These defects can be remedied by a careful washing of the stock nd regulation of the tern- ionshb ation fejyig kbJusalsMlavsaaaHWMs York makes a hole in one ! iIcanaoianJ pacific To Ketchikan, Wrangrll, Juneau and Skagway October 8, 19, 29. To what extent these changes may afect the-quality of the meal or oil. must first be found out before fish meal manufacturers can be persuaded to change the process which, at present gives satisfaction. MODERATE SI CCES.S In experiments carried out on a small scale at the Fisheries Experimental Station (Pacific), several sample of good quality liquid glues have been prepared from fish heads. Further work will be undertaken to Improve the quality of the glue, and modify method of manu facture to meet condition on this coast. Inmany place the supply of fresh water Is limited and In order to conserve It," the most eiflclent method of washing the raw material will have to be determined. Lack of space and lack of time In the busy season may make It impassible to wash the stock completely and methods will be tested to remove the Impurities after the glue has been made. In addition, there are many fish dog fish, rat fish, skate which are caught in great number by fishermen but are worthless. These will be tested with a view to obtaining glue from them. The experimental work on this whole problem Is only In Its initial stages) and will require a year or two tor Its completion, but preliminary work ha demonstrated the possibility of making a satisfactory glue, the commercial value and demand for such product, and the profit to the fishing Industry ot the complete utilisation of Its waste products.
