Published Every Afternoon, except Sunday, by Prince Rupert Daily News, Limited, Third Avenue. H. F. PULLEN - - Managing Editor. Member of Audit Bureau of Circulations. DAILY EDITION. Thursday, May 12, 1927 COUNTRY WAS AT FAULT A news despatch tell of four hundred Mennonites who left Manitoba recently, their farms being taken over by more recent arrivals from southern Russia, who wish to become Canadian citizens and have their children educated. Those leaving have never become citizens, although in the country fifty years. It does not, speak well for Canada that people could live here for fifty years without wishing to become citizens. The difficulty seems to have been that they were mistakenly allowed too much liberty and it became license. In British Columbia there was a case where the Doukhobors did not wish to have their, children educated in the public schools. The B.C. government was firm with the result that they have changed their attitude. We do not want any people in this country who are not willing to conform to the ways of the country and to become citizens and educate their children. It would not be tolerated in the United States and we should not allow it here. Firmness in this matter should be insisted on, in order that the younger generation may have a chance. We are better off without any alien people, no matter what country they are from, who will not become Canadian within a reasonable time. It's difficult to recognize a hero unless you see him In action. Ordinarily he is just like common people. BOTH HUSH PARTIES LOSE Both parties in the Irish Free State have lost their suits for the fund raised in the United States in aid of the establishment of an Irish Republic and the judge has decided that the money shall be returned to the donors. It amounts to about two and a half million dollars. This action puts the quietus to a lot of trouble for if De Valera had secured' the money he would have used it to try to unseat the present government and involve the country in more political disturbances. The U.S. judge did a service to the Emerald Jsle in acting as he did. This is a commercial age and after all anything that is not on a commercial basis is not worth very much. WERE .METHODS WRONG? G. G. McGeer on his returri from the East told the Vancouver people their methods were wrong in their dealings with the Ottawa government. It is to be supposed he meant that they should have returned Liberals Instead of Conservatives. The same might have been said for this constituency. Of course it should not be. It should not be, wrong to return a Liberal when a Conservative government is in office and vice versa, but it seems to be looked upon that way. At any rate, however unbiased we may be, we like to do things for our friends better than for those opposed to us. It is human nature. It is to be hoped Prince Rupert will not suffer or. that account, although it seems as if she has already suffereJ in not getting the vote for fishermen's floats, which was in the estimates last year but which this year has been left out. Young, couples who wish to get along well together ' ? should avoid being partners at bridge. . ,V CITY IS WHAT CITIZENS MAKE IT. . A city will be just,as attractive andtbeautiftil as.the people decide to make it, says the a9)to. W. Pxess.. Through t'jie'glect and absence of a common effort, it may become slovenly1 -and uhattrac tive, if not worse. But with a desire to have the city.spic and span, to beautify the residential districts and improve the business sec-tions, a totally different and much more Inspiring effect can be produced. Which Is the more desirable? The people may talk of the ad-Vantages of their city from a business standpoint or for industrial purposes, but what will give them more real pride in it, and what they will tell their friends elsewhere about with greater enthusiasm, will be its beauty, Its pleasing appearance, the features that create a favorable impression with all visitors and reflect the taste, self, respect and character of the citizens. Theneck was once the unpopular part of a chicken but what a change has come about in the past few years. f Last week some of the boys were getting out their straw hats and looking them oyer but on Sunday they decided to buy fedoras.
