The policy of the board in giving promotions to members of the staff is one to be commended for it encourages the teachers to give of their best and'is a fitting reward to them for good work well done. ; If people knock you, the best thing to do is mind j.-0'ur own business as an object lesson to' them. CRIMINALS SHOULD KEEP OUT OF CANADA Criminals when they become very daring are apt to invade Canada but they often make a mistake in doing so. This has been proved in numerous cases. The latest to do so was the man who seemed to take a delight in strangling women. He went to Winnipeg and has apparently been caught by the police. "The arrested man - nH'Ur--d 8FaW JlUbu given a fair trial v after the excitement has died down and jf he is guilty he will have iu vay me penalty, ijiat is the British way and it Is the best way. lesson 10 oe learned is mat American criminals should keep out of Canada. if they wish to retain life and liberty. MORE FREQUENT MAIL SERVICE It is not a mail car but a baggage car service that is needed at first in order to give Prince Rupert a daily mail service to and from the East. If evervthine east of Edmnntnn w nut nt .i,. locked and a sack Is put In at every Important point enroute such as Jasper, McP.ride, Prince George, Vanderhoof, Telkwa, Smithers, Hazelton and Terrace, that will be a beginning and will add very little to the present expense. As a visitor to the city remarked, it Is ridiculous to think that from Friday afternoon there will be no .more mail arrive until Monday afternoon. If the mail arrived every day it would be much easier than at present for the post office staff as the work would be more daily equalized. A village is a place where the mail arrives only three times a week. Why remain a village? CONDITION OF NORTH COAST NATIVES The condition of the natives on this coast is an excellent one and they are not demoralized by naving any handout from the gov "K They take their places in a great many respects as citizens of BritisTi Columbia except that they usually live on reserves and do not vote. They -might, vote if they left the -reserves. t The natives are steadily improving their condition and earning the respect of the white population. They take a prominent part In the fishing and trapping and also engage In logging. Those are their chief occupations. Many of them are excellent carpenters, building their own boats and houses and as mechanics they run their own gas engines. Now the interior Indian are noing in for autos. The advice given to the Negroes of the south by Booker Washington applies also to the natives on this coast. He advised them to make a stake in the community, to be industrious, to purchase real estate or other property and carry on as decent self-respecting citizens and they would soon earn the respect of everyone and be looked up to Instead of being looked down upon. "Vaudeville, like motion pictures. Involves the art of condensation," says Bell. "On the vaudeville stage the player tries to put over as much of his story as possible in the briefest time. and the same thing applies on screen, where footage is the atum. So the two arts are in ia&ed on the same foundation." MAKING COMEDY IS a way! In "Upstage," an Intimate story laid behind the scenes with a vaudeville troupe. Bell directed a mixed cast of professional vaudeville actors and screen players. Miss Shearer plays the feminine half of a song-and-dance team. wearing some very gowns, and Oscar Shaw, himself famous In vaudeville, plays- the principal male role as her dancing partner. Others. In the cast Include Dorothy Phillips, Owen Lee. Ward Crane, T. Holtz. J. Frank OUndon. an dothers of note. ILLUSTRATED BY A MASTER OF THE ART Screen Stirrrns Changed Into and Comedian Chosen Just offhand, the ordinary uninformed theatre-goer might think that the transferring of a well known stage success to the screen would be a simple matter. Just place a camera before the company enacting' the stage play, let them go through their parts, and presto, the thing la done. But after spending al few minutes with Edward Small, who has turned -McFadden's Flats" Into the Screen success coming here Friday, one realizes that was necessary to revise the Idea considerably. Mr. Small took a visitor out on the "back lot" at Universal City, where a great tract of land had been used to build the elaborate streets, Interior cettlngs and, of most Importance, the flat building about which the story revolves. 'First, it was necessary to take the stage play and to do it entirely in order to make use of the many opportunities which are oSered by the screen and absolutely impossible on the speak-ing stage," said the producer. liril.ll FLATS "Of course, we don't photograph action before canvas drops as Is done on the stage. 80 the actual building of 'McFadden's Flats' became necessary. Also, having a building Instead of a painted drop to work with, we have ocen able to do many things In the making of the picture that never would have been dreamed possible when the story made Us appearance as A stage production." Sure enough, the flat building, com plcte to the last detaU, stood out on the "back lot," an evidence of the tremendous engineering, planning and building necessary to oner a screen audience an hour or eo of entertainment. The first step in the making of th picture was the preparation of the play into a story for the sereen by Hej iayior. That Charles Logue, Jack Wagner and Jack Jevne collaborated on the continuity.
