' DAILY EDITION. C28 3rd Avenue flANADlAN NATIONAL' Saturday, June 11, 1927 ASSOCIATED BOARD OF TRADE USEFUL The Associated Board of Trade formed at Smithers yesterday should prove to be a very useful organization, if only in permitting the members to compare notes and to learn to know and understand each other better. It should prove a unifying factor in the country which it serves and will help to counteract the dividing propensities of political organizations. The new board will be able to take up matters of common interest to the whole northern and central part of the country and to unite their forces in trying to secure impovements. A fisherman is something like fe telephone operator. He 3eeras to be happy when "line's busy. CONSERVATIVE VICTORY IN OKANAGAN At this distance it is difficult to know what is the meaning of the Okanagan election. K. C. McDonald was elected on more than one occasion and then when he received the appointment as a cabinet minister he was defeated. Again he comes back to his constituents but again he is rejected. Probably he will not ask them again but will retire in favor of some other candidate. It is to be presumed this victory will be consjdered'a feather in the cap of the new Conservative leader, Hon. s! F. Tolmie, who directed affairs for his party in the constituency during the election. Both sides took an active interest in the contest. It is undoubtedly quite a blow to the Liberals who were hoping they might reverse the decision of the previous election. If a man will not playtsecond fiddle he cannot to lead the orchestra. v GOOD WORK FOR FISHERMEN The United Church is doing some good work for the salmon trollers in providing reading rooms and baths at their trolling grounds. The salt chuck is too cold at Hippo Island and at Dundas Island for sea bathing and a warm bath is the only effective means of keeping clean at an occupation such as theirs. It is the kind of mission work that the men appreciate. When Croesus would unburden his conscience he makes a bounteous gift to the poor. LEARNING ENGLISH LANGUAGE Sometimes we are rather shocked in Canada when we hear of a small community that cannot speak the English language, the language of the British 'Empire. Yet it, conies to light that in .outlying parts of Scotland the language is not spoken to any extent. .transportation is an active factor m breaking down old customs and transportation is what those sections of the Empire need. It is satisfactory to know that in British Columbia there are very few who cannot associate with the rest of the people owing to the language bar. . If you have failed in business until no one will give you credit and there is no hope of reinstating yourself, change your occupation. Try lecturing on success. BLUFF OF SOVIET RUSSIA When the Russian Soviet arranged to buy horses in Canada it was not for the purpose of benefiting Canada. It was for their own benefit. Incidentally it may benefit us because every legitimate deal benefits lojji parties to it. So when it was announced that the deal would "be called off it was felt that the Soviet would be simply Injuring itself if it refused to carry out the arrangements made Now it seems that the cancellation of the deal was only a bluff, Russia needed the horses and we needed the money, so why not make the deal.
