a
career
spent

tropic
wilderness

the
Athabas-
k
and
the
Barrenlands,
Nelson
Vlcksol,
well-known
piusher
and
trapper,
has
encountered
many
varieties
of
snakes,
mostly
of
the
spectral
variety,
and
ranging
through
every
shade
of
the
spectrum
from
sky
and
navy
blue,
cerise,
mauve,
pink,
heliotrope
and
Cleopatra
green.
But
never,
he
candidly
admits,
has
he
Men
anything
like
he
met
the
other
day
along
the
Pembina
River
in
the
vicinity
of
.Sangudo.
The
trap-
lcr
Is
now

the
city,
laying
lu
a
stock
of
"anti-snakebite
lotion."
Mr.
Vlckstol
was
on
a
prospecting
trip
along
the
river,
when
his
attention
was
attracted
by
a
bare
gravel
ridge
along
a
tributary
creek,
where
he
thought
It
might
pay
him
to
try
and
wash
out
some
gold.
Scrambling
through
the
wUlows
at
the
bottom
of
the
'bill,
the
prospector
heard
faint
humming
sound.
The
hum
ming
became
louder
as
he
ncarcd
the
foot
of
the
hill.
Bursting
through
the
fringe
of
brush.
Mr.
Vlckstol
saw
a
sight
that
he
had
never
imagined
la

dreams.

entire
hillside
was
littered
with
hundreds
of
snakes,
writhing
and

on
the
sand,
where
they
were
sunning
themselves
with
every
appearance
of
pleasure
on
their
chubby
faces.

slope,

huge
grey
monster,
evidently
the
leader,
rose
and
commenced
