There is little doubt. however, that of all games hockey la one of the fastest and most Interesting both for the players and spectators. Its cssericc is speed which explains, per haps. A team (of aM-stars has frequently been beaten y a well-trained team. Although modern hockey la eaneotl-ully a Canadian product, the beginnings are much more ancient. The English hare played ground hockey for many years and a relief In the Na tional Museum in Athens shows two Oreek boys facing oft while a sour- faced referee stands ready to drop the puck. It Is unfortunate from the Canadian point of view that the people of the United States hare taken such a violent liking to hockey. It appears, as a matter of fact, that the United Slates Is establishing the same economic empire In hockey that It has set up In other fields. In spite of this, horn ever, the ama teur game should always flourish in Canada more than in any other coun try. To paraphrase the old saying, we ve the men, we have the Ice. and we have the weather, too. Of the last two of these, at any rate, the United States j cannot rob us. Pernaps hockey may ome day become definitely established in Prince Rupert. There are many who hope so. The good start that has been made by skaters this month of November during which In a normal year there is not usually much of this kind ot .jport, should augur wen for the com ing season although we In Prince Ru pert ere used to all vagaries of the weather and. who knows, this may have been the only cold snap we get here this wlfiter. However, that should not be the scf e for.ilf; It should be. many tsns will go fMrfi Ont thing 1 certain and' 'that Is that we 'have more skating venues here this year than we ever had before. This should make the organization of hockey possible al though, of course. It will never be much of a certain quantity until an artificial rink is established. s We wonder Yrltat has haDncned to Prince RupertVVVgymnasium project. They say It's wisdom 'to let sleeping dogs lie but the season Is comlnj around again whtn this particular dog should be awake and. perhaps, as a matter ot fact. It would be Just as well to disturb Its slumbers about now. Some progress waa made last winter In connection with 'plans for the undertaking. It would be too bad if another cason should- pass without seeing some further action tsken . toward the materialization of this badly needed facility in Prince Rupert. Officials of the AA.IT. of C. and the Canadian Olympic Committee express the thought that amateur track and field athletic a)- eomlnr back stron? In public favor.
