Monday, May 2, 1927 CO OPERATION NEEDED IN TAX COLLECTION At this season of the year we are reminded that there is an other Income tax form to fill out and another arithmetical puzzle to solve before we can hand a check to the tax collector and feel that n nave to pay iaxes. mat is right and just. The cost of carrying on the affairs of the country must be met and the people who live in the country and enjoy its privileges are thrones who must pay. What the taxpayers should demand is that the taxes be kept as low as possible and that the collection method be easy and efficient. A politician is a person who can hurl charges at his opponents without knowing whether they are true or not. ' PRESENT SYSTEM NOT EFFICIENT The present system of collecting the Income tax is not efficient. The different forms have to be filled out, one for the province and another for the Dominion. Two different tax collectors have to be satisfied and time has to be taken to collate the data asked for. If the Dominion and provincial forms were similar, there would be no particular objection but they are not. There hould be either similar forms or perhaps only one form with one collector maVin the collection for both government. The forms cost money and the time devoted to filling them in is also, an expense. If we must pay taxes, we should demand from our government that they make it' as easy as possible and not try to burden us with unnecessary expense and labor. Vancouver grain shipments are down nineteen million bushels this season and Prince Rupert is up nearly six millions. But we must not crow yet. We may do better next year. - BONDS SOLI) WELL IN NEW YORK J . The selling of a 15 million dollar Canadian National Railways oonu issue in ."sew i one in two hours was something of a record in Canadian finance. It is an indication that the finances of Canada are sound and that the "whisjter of death'Ualamity howlers of a few-years ago have been shown to be nothing but false prophets. Canada is prosperous and the C.N. Railway is prosperous and it is to ie hoped it will continue to prosper and give the service that the people of Canada require. Much of the credit of this will will go to Sir Henry Thornton and our own railway .director, Fred Dawson, should get at least a modicum of praise. Cheer up people, the worst is yet to come. Next year or the year after there may be an election. QUIET WORK BUT EFFICIENT Fred Dawson Is out of town and the writer of this article h I as not seen him for months so this is erhaps a good opportunity to mention the quiet and efficient work being done by the local director of the Canadian National Railways. He gives a great deal of time in making trips to Montreal for meetings of the .board and frequently he has to rush off at an hour's notice in answer to a summons frpm;the president to give his valuable advice on matters in which this part of the country is directly interested. Report says that he is constantly pressing .for things which would benefit the west and for all this he. gets' very little pay and hardly any thanks from the people who benefit.- - In spite of a little cloud of pessimism that often hangs -over Prince Rupert, it is noticed that the people in the north enjoy life just as much as do those who swelter in the heat of the south. There are a lot of fine little cities on Prince Rupert has them all beaten a mile really count. HAROLD LLOYD AT HIS MERRY BEST IN "FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE" Flashing on the beeU of his college comedy classic. "The Freshman." comes another hilarious Harold Lloyd triumph, i bearing the somewhat startling though quite appropriate title of "For Heaven's Sakel" which Is coming to the West-holme Theatre as this week-end' Its- tire. The Irrepressible and bespectacled comedian la a millionaire clubman and Starts out to uplift the hardboUed deni zens in the alum section of his city, succeeding In stirring up no end of excitement, fun galore, thrills aplenty nd a choice assortment of long, loud. lingering laughs. There is an abundance of sentiment and pathos that give the atory an ap pealing flavor and serve to emphasise the funny gags and sparkling fooltrf. As In "The Freshman." there la a worth-while Idea underlying the rollicking humor In this instance, the wholesome thought that .happlneM Is to be found In helping others. Harold's rlb-tlckllng trials and tribulations arise from the fact that the toughs and gangsters resent his missionary efforts. The methods he uses in winning them ever are as ingenious as they are mirth-provoking. The role la one made to order lor Uoyd and he pltyt It -with a carefree test and a chipper self-confidence that Is quite convincing and altogether delightful. Jobyna Ralston, whose demure charm and winsome loveliness was such an asset to "The Freshman." Is again hi leading lady. The others In the large and capable supporting cast Include such experienced pis vers as Noah Young. James Mason and Paul Wlegel. The picture haa been generously embroidered with f wealth' of local color, and the alum atmosphere, around which most of the action centers, haa been reproduced with fidelity and realism.
