TOTEM POLE TO BE TAKEN DOWN ITY ORDERS MENACING STItlCTl'Ri: .t .Kron aye. .m mh'on-k STREET TO UK MOVEII The structure having been a menace to traffic, the totem pole at the Inter section of Second Avenue and Second Street will be taken down by the Boaru of Works at once and Its re-erectlon a some suitable location will be deter mined later according to a decision 'of the city council last night. The matter came before the council in the form of a recommendation from (he finance commttttee. which asked that the pole be removed and that the Board of Works be asked to undertake the Job. Aid. Perry thought the action a little hasty as it would be better to ascertain the proposed cost of the removal and then the matter could be further con-, sldered by the council. Aid. Stephens said that several mem- mers of the Board of Trade had re cently Interviewed the finance commit tee on another subject and the matter the pole was discussed. Those mem bers of the Board of Trade who were present, he said, favored the removal of the pole as it was considered to be dangerous to traffic In its present location. an accident, occurred there the city would be held responsible and he thought that the sooner it was out of the way the better. Aid. Perry inquired as to where It was proposed to erect It again and consider ed that It would be wise not to rush into the thing without first finding out what It would cost and whether it Was going to be thrown away or put up in some other place. - ox government property? Aid. Jos. Greer said that, at the meeting of the finance committee. It bad been mentioned that the question might be taken up with Hon. T. D. Pattullo when he arrived in the city! and perhaps a suitable location might j be found on some of the provincial gov-! eminent property. I Aid. Brown favored the removal of the pole as soon as possible, lis considered It very unsafe it the present location. It would be time enough to talk about putting It up again after it was down. The recommendation was then adopt ed by the council on the understanding that the Board of Works confer with tbe Board of Trade to a suitable location for the pole and then report back to the council for endoreatlon.
