1'AUE TWO CATCHING SUCKEKS WITH CLEVER BAIT One may wonder at the regularity with which the "born sucker" is taken in by sharpers of all sort, nays the Ketchikan Chronicle. But a study of literature prepared to stimulate the "sucker's" desire for "bg profits quick" tells a story all its own. It answers the question of millions, "why do not the authorities catch and punish the . sharpers Instead' of con.entlnK themselves with issuing warnings to beware of them?" And this literature is conclusive as to the determined character of the hunt that incessantly goes on to catch them. That more are not caught is due to their having discovered the safe ground that lies between promises that cannot be fulfilled and a type of appeal that assures cupidity's rushing in with demand that his money be accepted In exchange for the thing boomed, though no promise has been made in connection with it and no one has been solicited to buy. So subtly is the appeal to avarice made, so .skilfully is the reader .Impressed with the merits of that with which It is" desired to impress him that "suckers" are sure to be hooked without the possibility of any "come-back" on the sharpers. T. D. Pattullo was in the city recently he was asked if he was looking for the position of Premier. He replied in the negative, stating that he did not believe in any person looking for it. The office should seek the man, rather than the man the office. He had no doubt that any man chosen for the position would accept it as a public duty but he did not like to see a person "going after' 'any position of importance. In spite of the modesty of Mr. Pattullo, there are a great many people who think he would make an excellent premier and one that would add dignity to the office. However, it is' for the members of the Legislature to do their own choosing. Talking is quite all right as long as the talker says something. The objection most of us take is,. to th( jargon who talks all the time and never even 'suggests an idea. INTENSE HEAT IS FATAI'tf 1 Intense heat in the east is proving fatal to many of those who are not, sufficiently strong to withstand it. That is the trouble with many climates. It is either intensely hot or intensely cold but here it'is neither. Very seldom is it very hot and never very cold. We often feel that we are under disabilities here in regard to' weather but that is largely because we are not properly informed as to what itjis like in other places. ;- '( II I II I ! Nervous conditions are mott difficult to oyer come and there seems to be no treatment to compare with Dr. Chase's Nerve Food to restore exhausted nerves. Children's health responds quickly to this well known reatoratire treatment. Mrs. George A. She seemed to sJtow symptoms of 8t. Vitus' Dance and had queer spells, something like fits, at nights. She was out of school for a whole year, as her -nerves were so bad. Acting on a friend's advice, we gave, her Nerve.Food andrafter a few rndnths! time'wa' UgaW to tee a noted change In her. so we kept on with the Nerve Food until she was completely relieved and for the last year she has been absolutely free of the old trouble, sleeps well and is doing fine at school. John Oliver Who Is Said to be Retiring I Interior Newa) The Honorable John Oliver has re signed aa leader of the Liberal govern- mht In British CMumbht. Hla succes-wr.wUl shortly be named and In a very short time there will descend a shower of floral tributes upon that doughty warrior In the political battlefield of British Columbia. Tomorrow It will be the same much-ecomlumed John Oliver we know today as "Honest John" who will pass out of the political picture and over the political horizon, yet the Jibes, i and ridicule and abuse of today wUl tomorrow give way to the real feeling that comes from down deeper than the political necessities of other occasions. Laboring under what disadvantages there may and must be in, being de ptived of the privileges of education. John Oliver--this "Honest John" Is British Columbia's wonder man. With his life-long opponent. W. J. Bowser, he has a knowledge of this province equalled by no other man. In the Intricacies of the constitution he had no superior; as a political-strategist and. party leader his work of the last session showed him to be head and shoulders above any other J member in the House. He has been a faithful public servant for a lifetime and an unrelenting guardian of the rights ofjh'.t province. His fight for equal-iced frelghf rates and his battle still under way for an adjustment of the terms under which this province Joined the confederation of provinces, have ' demonstrated alike his determination and bl knowledge of British Columbia and the West, Yesterday he stood before taunts and Jeers of the unreasonable; today ' he atands before hla people respected; to morrow he will have his praises sung. But before he reaches the fade-out of his career it would appear to be a kindly. human thing to give Just a few of the flowers today. Man in the Moon x - -n My. but it's hot!
