FLAT RACING STARTS AGAIN rettivii on Lincoln- ani NATIONAL IN WEEK Ol' MAIiril SI H I.U1IIT LIVERPOOL, March 15. Canadian Press Despatch) Following the trad! tlon of many years the old National Hunt season closes and the new flat racing season opens. In a week of great races. This year It is the -week of March 21. The Lincolnshire Handicap on Wednesday, the' 23rd, and the Grand National steeplechase on FTlday, the 25th, are outstanding races not only of the week but of the whole year. The Lincolnshire 'Is over the straight mile at Lincoln, and the National once again over the historic four mile course at Alntree, Liverpool. In between, on March 24. is sandwiched the Liverpool opnng tup, oi a little more than a mile and a quarter, a fairly Important event tn the series of spring handicaps. Prom the public's point of view, both the opening flat race and the cloning steeplechase are fairly open events, how-ever tliey may result on tlie field. At least, there U very little betting, and this Is not wholly accounted for by the betting tax. I.1M OlAMIItlliK Twice In the last three years a French horse has won the Lincolnshire Handicap. There seems to be a distinct possibility that the race this year will again be won by a foreign horse, for AUerus, French-trained pride of M.( Boussac, is the favorite, or .rather is at the shortest-priced odds. Baron Oppenhelm'a crack German! thoroughbred Welssdora is at the too of the table of weights with 126 pounds. and another French horse. Paul Wer-J uicuurr ujnua, is vnira wun 1Z3 pounds. Other leading contenders how. ever are the English horses Friar Wile. Orandfllght and Helter Skelter. B. Coupon's Orblndos. carrying 08 pounds. Is a prominent candidate. CSKAMl NATIONAL Jack Horner. Misconduct and Sprig appear the leading candidates for the Grand National. Jack Horner of course won the race last year; and he Is to carry 22 pounds more than in his victorious effort. Misconduct has been running well In preparation, and defeated other good National candidates In the Coventry steeplechase a few days ago. Sprig has finished fourth for the last two years. The heaviest-weighted horse Is Stephen Sanford't Bright Boy, third last year. Ballystockart and Misconduct are comparatively lightly handicapped and on this account and on their showing in the National Hunt season now closing, are attracting some support. The advance prospects for the national are decidedly uncertain. At the same time the race Is never won by a bad horse, and the last complete outsider to win It was Rublo In 1908. at 66 to one. Other winners' since have been perhaps at long odds, but at the same time have generally been popular la notes. More than 60 accepted the weights for the National. MAKES SCIENCE OFTCAPPING siTitrT or r.NTO.v mavs si tos Is NOW OCT CLINTON, March 1$. For years fur buyers here have marvelled at the fine pelts brought In by Edward Rioui from his trap lines In the Bridge Lake country, and now the secret Is out. At tlie close of each trapping season Rloui brings in a catch worth from II,-OW U SJ.OO0. Hi line extends ovet ISO. miles, and he works as hard durtnj the summer as, In winter, tor he say that the preparations he makes In warm weather are responsible, for his bountiful catch after the anow flies. The lakes and streams of the Bridge Lake country are teeming with fish and ail the fUh he can catch during the summer he takes out along the trapline and scatters near the spots where a few months hence he plans to place his steel-Jawed traps, in this way the fur-bearing animals In Rloux's territory be come accustomed to obtaining their food along the trapline route.
