NICE MESSAGE FROM VISITORS President of Vancouver Hoard of Trade Writes Thanking Local x Members At the Board of Trade meeting last night Thorn McClymont presiding. letter was read tram W. E. Payne, exe cutive secretary of the Vancouver Board of Trade aa foHowa; Dear Mr. Brookabank. Now that our party has returned to Vancouver, It Is again my great privilege to write to your Board, and -to express to your membership our great appreciation for the reception accorded our party In your city. I have had the privilege and opportunity of visiting Prince Rupert on four occasions with members of our Board and have noticed the great growing sentiment of community Interest that exists between our two cities. This Is as it should be, and .1 can assure you that the Vancouver Board of Trade is ready and willing at all times to continue to develop this feeling of community Interest. , Our members greatly enjoyed their stay In Itupert. The visit to the Dry Dock and Cold Storage plant, and last, but not least, the splendid civic welcome at the dance In the evening. Every member of our delegation was immensely honored at the splendid turnout of your Prince Rupert people. It was a great compliment to us and we certainly appreciated It. Our only regret was that our schedule did not permit of a longer stop-over. Our only hope Is that we may some day have the pleasure and privilege of receiving a delegation from your city, which will provide us with an opportunity of reciprocating your many kindnesses. It Is not possible to convey our thanks to all those who entertained' our members both collectively and individually, and I would ask you to give this the widest possible publicity, so that all may know that we are thoroughly grateful for the kindnesses extended to us. MILLION MILES ON STEAMSHIPS Captain Donald is Veteran Sea and Has Taken Many Commands "It Is nearly forty years since the captain started his nautical, career, for despite his snap and youthful appear ance, the captain Is quite v a Veteran salt. He learned to "reef hand and steer and handle stun'sl gear" on the full rigged ship "Abereame.' one of the clippers engaged In the Australian trade, that hailed from the port of Greenock. Ships built at that port and manned by Greenocklans were ever a standard of excellence. Then men were trained In a hard school. No wonder that young Donald graduated Into the hard Noes Scotia 'ships. "While serving on the .Milp Celestial Burrel, fate In the form of a typhoon brought him to British Columbia In 1899. Off the coast of Formosa In the China Sea a typhoon had dismasted the ship. She was towed to Hong Kong where a naval court condemned her. The crew were sent home to their port of registry. Yarmouth, Nova Scotia by way of Vancouver. Perhaps It was the dread of the long railroad Journey across the continent that most sallormen have; at any rate Dan Donald decided to try hi luck of Captain "Danny" Donald of the C.N.R. steamer Prince Rupert recently completed his one millionth mile of travel as a steamship master In the service of the Canadian National coast fleet of (.teamshlps that operate in the inland waters between Skagway and Vancouver and way ports. This is believed to be near. If not quite, a record lri these ' waters. The Western Tribune of Vancouver, B.C., recently contained the following concerning the record of Capt. Donald: "When Captain "Dan"Donald. Cpmmo-dore of the Canadian National coast fleet of steamships brought his vessel, the BS. Prince Rupert safely to her berth at Vancouver this week that pop ular navigator had covered a million miles of British Columbia's Inside pas sage between this port and Prince Rupert in the service of the Canadian FORTY EAIt SERVICE on the Pacific coast. CANNERY TKMIKK "Three month after, saw him In oommsnd of the 'Dreaanaught,- a can nery tender In the B.C. Packers service. For several year he served that com pany. Entering the service of the Union Steamship Co. he served on different vessels of that fleet from the Old Reliable "Camosun." to the smaller craft He navigated the tortuous channels of our Indented coast, perfecting his al-Jtost uneanny knowledge. When the 'Cetrlaua" joined the coast fleet he wa appointed as her pilot. "On the Inauguration of a ateamshl) tervlce between Prince Rupert and th auth by the a rand Trunk Pacific, Cap .aln Donald was appointed Chief Office if the Prince Albert, being given com-nand shortly after. Since that day, with he exception of a few weeks In port while his different commands have been under overhaul, and a period while the Captain was absent In Europe negotia ting lor the purchase of a passenger steamer for the northern run, he has been continuously on duty, bringing every voyage to a safe arrival. "In 1913 the Canadian Government awarded him with a gold watch "For his skill and courage displayed In saving 33 passengers and crew" from a small vessel drifting helpless In a storm on the Qulf. The Prince Oeorge was under his command for a period of the Oreat War on special Admiralty commission. for which he wears the war decorations."
