If your eyes are giving trouble, have them attended to and at once. SIRFAC1NG LEAD'S TO SOME INTERESTING REPARTEE GREEK WANTS TO KNOW Ml Jw and Others Enter Into Ikrbate In Regard to Co-t of City Work tlx- There was some, rather heated discussion at Ia&t night's council meeting In connection with street maintenance and tbe board of work came In for some criticism to which Its members vigorously responded. Reminiscent of! tbe olden days when aldermen weren't so polite to each other as they usually are today, there was a tendency to call ;a spad a spade and one member of the board to tell the other what he thought about him arxf his wort, i The discussion was precipitated when jtbe Board of Works presented a report more ground than last year and that some new streets would be attended to as well as old ones when Aid. Jos. Greer inquired what the cost of tbe material would be and what it would cover. Aid. Ferry replied that the cost would be altogether 17.000 which would provide for tbe cost of tbe material and Its laying down. Tbe cost would be largely taken care of out of last year's bylaw which had not yet been completely exhausted. MAYOR TAKES ISM'E Mayor Newton took Issue with Aid. Perry's explanation. As be remembered it. from meeting of the Board of Works last week. It would cost 'much more than $7,000 to carry out tbe program of street maintenance proposed for this year. It was suggested at the meeting of the Board of Works that the cost in tbe main would be borne by, the city engineer's estimates for the year wlUi the balance from last year's bylaw. As be remembered It tbe cost.1 far from 7.000. bad been estimated at about 118.000. "Either you or I are mistaken. Aid. Perry," asserted His Worship. Aid. Perry started to explain that tbe matter bad been threshed over since the meeting of the Board of Works when the mayor Interrogated: "If you are going to thresh things over at a' regular meeting of tbe board of works and then thresh them over again at some kind of a meeting when I am not present, is it any wonder that fl should be mistaken now 7" Aid. Perry ' again gave his assurance that tbe material and work under question In tbe present recommendation' would not cost more than 17.000. Aid. W. J. Oreer pointed out that the reoouunendation before the council only covered tbe cost of the tarria and putting it down. It had birthing to do with fixing the streets. Then why did Aid. Perry not glvel straightforward answer to Aid. Jos, Greer's question." Inquired tbe mayor., If Aid. Jos. Greer goes away with Aid Perry's explanation he would believe tbe cost was only to be $7,000 whereas last week the Board of Works had found that the cost would be $18,000 or even $18,000." Al0 MAINTENANCE WORK Aid. W. J. Oreer felt that Aid. Jos. Greer understood quite well what" the $7,000 covered. Tbe additional $12,000 was for maintenance work on other streeta. "What U the Board of Works' pi. posed program this year going to cost?' inquired tbe mayor. "About $19000 aa a matter of fsct,' replied Aid. W..J. Oreer. "Ahd Aid.. Jos. Perry asked if Mr. Lambie would aim take charge of the Shawatlans Lake pumping station and see that It was fired occasionally so It would be kept In condition. He felt- thst, in view of tbe salary Increase. Mr. Lambie might fairly be asked to do this. Aid. Brown referred to the fact that Aid. Perry last week had asked that the steam plant be given Into tbe charge of the Board of Worka as a part of tbe waterworks system. He asked Aid. Perry If It would be expected that Mr. Lambie should be in charge of the pumping station under such Circum stances, t Aid. Perry suggested that Mr. Lambie might look after the pumping station until such time as It waa actually taken over by tbe Board of Worka. Aid. Brown agreed with this proposal but said that tbe.
