JURISDICTION WATERWORKS Was Main Subject of Discussion at Council Meeting To be Decided In Two Weeks Whether the (km at Wood worth Lake and the pipe line should come under the jurisdiction of the Board of Work tnd the city engineer or the uUUtlei committee and the superintendent of utilities formed the main topic for discussion at last night' council meeting. Decision on the matter was deferred for two weeks and. In the meantime, the board of works and utilities committee will confer on the question. The subject was brought up by Aid Perry, chairman of the board of works who, after reporting that a diver had disturbed the water In the dam at the intake causing refuse to come Into the reservoir which had to toe cleaned out. moved that the dam and pipe line tbould in future be In chargt of the board of works and city engineer who would carry out any repairs or maintenance work that might be necesssry. Aid. W. J. Oreer seconded the motion. Aid. Brown declared himself as ab solutely opposed to the suggestion. The utUltlea had paid part of the pipe line and he felt that the utilities had a right to say bow money waa to be spent on It. In the Interests of efficiency and good management. Aid. Perry felt that either one department or other should be In charge of the dam and pipe line. At the situation was at present one depart ment did not know what the other was going to do and there was general con 'uslon and Inconvenience. ALDERMAN' IIKfMVV Aid. Brown did not know anything about the diver going down. He had heard that the superintendent Intended to hare some diving done when the water was low but no particulars had been brought to his notice. At the pre sent time work on the dam and pipe line had been done jointly. There had been some trouble and the board of works had been recently patrolling the line. Aid. Perry wanted to be fair to every one concerned. The line had been out of order and the board of works had put It In shape. Now be thought one department should handle the matter and, since the board of works had done the work, he thought It should be al lowed to stay with It. Aid. W. J. Oreer thought that the dam should be in charge of the city engineer. As for the pipe line he did not think It mattered so much. He thought there should be a separate committee of the council on the water' works. Aid. Brown moved that the matter be left in abeyance for one month. Aid. Unzey seconding. Aid. Tinker Inquired If anything would be gained by holding the matter ' over. Aid. Brown replied that he thought there would. PASKISO -THE III CK. .,. 'Still passing the buck." remarked Aid. Perry. Aid. Linzey thought It would be good idea for the committees to get together and talk the matter over. Acting Mayor Jos. Oreer Inquired if a month were necessary. Jt was finally agreed between Aid. Brown and Aid. Perry to defer the matter for two weeks. KETCHIKAN BOYS NEAR DEATH WHEN BOAT GOES DOWN JUNEAU. Aug. 23.
