Despite many exemplary incidents of the kind that had already occurred this winter, Toronto parents went out Saturday night and when fire broke out in their home at 4 o'clock Sunday morning four children of tender years were burned to death. So again arises a case that involved what looks almost like criminal negligence. In view of the multitude of such occurrences it would seem time that statutes were enacted to provide for the prosecution of such people or if present statutes cover the case they should be enforced. The practice of leaving children alone is becoming too common and it has now come to a point where something should be done to prevent it "GOOD OLD TIMES" NOT AS GOOD AS TODAV. "People speak, of the 'good old times' but they weren't as good nor as happy as they are today. There is more willingness to help the other fellow nowadays, a better spirit of friendship, the standard of living is higher and people generally are more comfortable." This from D. Barnwell, who has just retired as general, tie' agent in Winnipeg for the Canadian Pacific Railway after forty-four years of service. Mr. Barnwell recalls the days when construction of the first trans-continental railway was regarded as a doubtful undertaking; when laying the steel to Port Arthur had not been completed; when 3Iain Street In Winnipeg was a straggling trail, over which the bullock carta used to plow up to their hubs in mud. He mentioned the gala celebration on" the day that a plank sidewalk was laid on Princess Street, now one of the-principal business arteries of the Manitoba capital. Prior to commencement of construction of the C.P.R. the white population form Port Arthur, then known as Prince Albert Landfrig, to Vancouver, did not exceed 10,000 persons, Mr. Barnwell referred to the demonstration that greeted the arrival of the first passenger train In Winnipeg. Hundreds of citizens, Including the mayor and leading businessmen were at the small station when the train pulled in, gaily decorated with flags. Cheers followed it when it departed on its historic run to the Pacific coast. Shortly after a daily service was" inaugurated, Mr. Barnwell said. FOREIGN TRADE STILL GOING UP. v For the second successive year the foreign commerce of the Dominion will exceed the $2,000,000,000 mark. This is an accomplishment which is regarded as giving still further evidence of the soundness of Canada's position at this time, and reflects not only the natural growth of the country, bu also the able manner in which her business men are extending the world markets for their products. The latest trade statistics available are those covering the twelve months to the end of last October. These serve to show the situation virtually as it exists today. Actual volume of trade in-the twelve months was $2,298,99.1,-820. This is in contrast to a total of ?2,07.r,S 14,989 for the preceding period,, and with $1,070,012,203 for the twelve months ended In 1924. Of the 1926 total, a sum of $1,307,879,711 was representative of total exports, of, which $1, 293,639, 1C9 was made up of Canadian produce ind goods, and, total imports of $991,114,109. Triis indicates if favorable balance of trade for the country last year of better than $302,000,000, which is considerably ahead of other recent years. Certainly, this showing both for total trade balance is an encouraging one in a year which has been beset by a number of difficulties. Of major Importance as an adverse factor against expansion of Canada's overseas marketing was the British coal strike, and the consequent reduction which it caused in the purchasing power of the English people. Had it. not been for this condition, it is certain that the year's showing wpuld have been even more impressive than it actually has been. maken OP NESTLES BABY FOOD j The luternatlonal extension program announced recently by officers ..o the isunreme Lod?e Knlehts of Pvthlss. will. set as a mark in the increase of Its membership under the general plan an nounced by the Supreme Lodge to secure a twenty per cent net gain during the year. the Supreme Domain."
