M cCRACKEN AND Stoll-McCracken Arctic Party Cut Off by Ice Pack In Bering Straits After Being Driven South May be Marooned all Winter Unless Ice Moves Must Land Eskimos and Pick up Anthropological Squad at Diomcdc Island Before Sailing South That the schooner Morrissey is now hove to on the western side of Bering Strait awaiting a chance to pick up a party of marooned men on Diomede Island after being driven south from Wrangell Island by a southern movement of the ice pack, is the word received here by the Radio Station 5GT operated by local people. When the party has been picked up the vessel will try to proceed down the coast and should be in Prince Rupert in about six w eeks' time if the ice pack lets them through. The alternative is that the party will be marooned all winter. According to Captain Bartlett and the Eskimos this is one of the earliest known dates for the ice pack to fill Bering StraitSj so an early winter is predicted. The ship must land Eskimos and pick up the anthropological party at Diomede Island before sailing south but so far the ice pack is preventing their approach. Myriads of jelly fish popularly attributed to tropical waters have been seen swimming among the icebergs. A rare rosy gull and other desirable specimens of birds have been collected. The vessel was visited by several handsome birds when 150 miles out in the Arctic. A flock of cranes was sighted flying across Bering Straits from the Asiatic side, the observation extending the range of these birds. Young seabirds just off the nest were seen takintr their first Swimming lessons among the icebergs. Some of them died, due to the early arrival of winter weather. Unusual ornithological records have been made. A rare beaked whale was seen following close to the vessel but the dangerous situation in the ice packs prevented attempts to get it. Haro'd McCracken, head of the party, sends word that all is well. INQUIRY BEING HELD TODAY ON. AIRPLANE LOSS VICTORIA.
