I'ULLEN - - Managing Editor. Advertising and Circulation telephone Editor and Reporter Telephone - Member of Audit Bureau of Circulations 93 86 Saturday. July 7, 1928 I1R1TISH COLUMBIA FIRST We agree with the Conservatives who are out to return Premier MacLean to power that "British Columbia first" should be our motto. When men who have been Conservative, prominent in pub-Ik Affairs, will throw over their party temporarily in order to give the prowinoe a fair deal, it is time for all people to consider the same coarse as a possibility. After ail, party does not mean much. H i the men and their policies that count. WOULD NOT CO-OPERATE If the Conservatives in the Legislature had been willing to co-operate with the government in regard to the P.G.E. the matter might have teen settled ere this. R. H. Pooley, leader of the group. dW net at thai time object to what the government wa doing but he slot ply was not willing to co-operate in anything they did, right or wrong. That is the old Bowser way of doing things and it seeing to have stuck. Just new it is well known that the best thing for British Columbia would be for MacLean to be returned, but co-operation is again lacking. However, a great many former Conservatives will quietly support the government candidates. They will co-operate individually, even if the party as a whole does not. LOCAL SITUATION Tee local situation indicates that Hon. T. D. Pattullo still holds the confidence of the people of this district. Reports from every paint point to this. While the minister of lands, owing to his position in the government, has had to leave Prince Rupert and reside is the capital, his interests are still here and he keeps in very close touch with the cKy. Probably he knows more about it than maajpf jt vfoo live heijdj tteJaig? -Mao-he ie in touch with the rest of th worlo and Ua CMkaidate that any constituency weaM like to have. We have nothing whatever against Mr. Thompson, who is an exeeHeot-eftiWn and fills an important role in the life of. the city by serving on the hospital board and in other capacities. It is not sasing anything against him to suggest that Mr. Pattullo is better able to nerve us. LET US HE SELFISH Let M for this once be selfish. We want the best possible representation in the Legislature. We want a man who can express minelf forcibly and well and whose opinion is respected by all. That man we believe is Mr. Pattullo, the member who has served us well in the past and who is ready to do so again if we wish it. Judging from all the indications, it seems as if the people do wish th&t hit services be retained in our behalf. GALSWoirrnrs reforms In a recent issue of T.P.'s Weekly, John Galsworthy summarized the reforms he favors. Among other things, he would like all school children taufht throughout school life that no paper or rubbish should lie left about in streets or public placea. He wants all school children taught to be kind to animalf and birds. He hopes that all builders of houses will one day be obliged by law to conform to a minimum standurd of beauty, laid down by an architectural committee. Ha wants those processes by which coal smoke is ultimately to be abolished to be hurried on with, and, he hopes that a law will one day be passed to prohibit coal smoke altogether in factory and home. . lt wxnAMhe liberal employment of artists to decorate piibllc buildings, railway stations, shops, hotels, hospitals, theatres apf factories. He advocates continuous - meetings betwn eimovere and employed with a view to better co-operation in IndunryTTfuT meetings that would never dissolve; in other words, , a permanent board of co-operation.
