DAILY EDITION The Letter, Btix POWER SITUATION Dear Mr. Eitor: Power! Power 1 Power! For several days before Monday's meeting of the City Council, out of the great cloud of mystery and secrecy surrounding the private meetings of the Council, POWER was being discussed by nearly everyone in the city, day the discussion has 1 I A 1 I J .I'? largely 10 anegeu vrfQKn the handling of the P TENDERS. After weeks o mm liberation, bickerings and My"- tery on the part of the.. ejncil and of lobbying on th-e jH of the representatives dfthe pwerj Companies concerned; many- interested citizens ffa'tMred if, the council chamber P gltthjp decision of the Council. 00 the, perhaps, most important busin&Ht a council has been called uptm to decide since incorporation. What a disappointment when ' Council en passed me duck w ijierp pie; people desired and til prived of information the erode? has had for weeks and on Which it could not decide. With "the publication of tenders only on Saturday we are called upon to decide this important matter on December 20. Is it any wonder then that there is a confused electorate with informat ion given only through the i channels of the interested Power Companies? With two power companies practically campaigning for city's plant and franchise we wonder why it Twfca necessary to call for tender at all. But there are two aldernwh, Rudderham and Tinker, who won the appreciation of the people by announcing that thy were ready to assume their responsibility. How much better it wortd have been if the other "had d their duty in the same way ami.' saved the electors from the campaigning of representatives of the Power Companies? Since Monday night's indecision cannot we ask "Who is representing the City?" Within six days of the polling what information has the Council given the electors? Surely it is flattering to the ejectors that they are expected to make a decision, on the shortest notice that the council failed to make after having possession of the tenders for weeks. We have an important matter before us and let us not aeeejrt flattery for intelligence. No one , in particular can claim the credit! for the interest of the Power! Companies in our city. The need J of Power has long been recog-i nixed by the citUens and all can-1 dldates for Mayor last year made ; it a plank in thei platform. If the council obtained such a report the citizens are entitled to know it and to read it and Alderman Collart makes a big mistake when he thinks he can further the interests of the American States Service Corporation by such tactics. The public wants to know and will insist upon knowing what is in the report of the consulting engineer and why he reported in favor of the Power Corporation of Canada, and against the American Company. Surely the ratepayers are as capable of judging for themselves as Alderman Collart is. We want all the Information placed on the table. RATEPAYER. Is if not a fact that all the profits of American capital, invested in Canada, go to the United States? 2. It is not also a fact, that the profits of Canadian capital, invested in Canada, circulate, and are re-invested in Canada ior the good of Canadians? We hear arguments pro and con, among others, that the Canadians have sidestepped the issue of developing this part of the country up to this time; and therefor, the Americans should be given the chance. But I have never noticed any anxiety on the part of the Americans to step In until the Canadian capitalists were ready to start. Yours truly, R. E. EYOLFSON.
