"THE DAILY NEWS aqtpttfay.-juiy l4i The Daily News PRINCE RUPERT - BRITISH COLUMRIi Published iTver? Afternoon, except Sunday, by Prince Rupert Dally News, Limited, Third Avenue. Managing Editor. v.l IK' ,0' to Miho- Member of Audit Dureau of Circulations 11: ilO.' DAILY EDITION' Saturday, July, 14, 1928 ON THE LAST LAI' With the c lotting of this week we turn to the final Ian of the election race witV.both candidates still Koing strong. Judgintfiby ine Lioerai Headquarters talk, the Liberal candidate h about two miles in the lead and 'judjtinjr by the Conservative headquarters opinion their candidate is likely to at least nose In. Looking at it from a more or less impartial height, we suggest that there will be no change. The people still have confidence In Hon. T. D. rattullo and seem likely to return him on Wednesday with a pretty substantial majority. This will be a wise thing to do for It is better to have a man on the government side than in oppo sition. That the MacLean government will be returned is a forgone conclusion. The people seem to be satisfied with the work they are doing and are ready to continue them In office. (JIVE MACLEAN A CHANCE The sporting spirit of the electorate is that Premier Mac-Lean, who only.recently assumed the reins of office after the death of Premier Oliver, should have a chance to show what he can do. We have known him as finance minister and he has promised exceedingly well. His record is excellent. Now he is being given an opportunity to prove himself at the head of a strong government. To snuff him out just at the opening of his career does not appeal to the sporting instincts of the people of the province. WELCOME TO DUHIIAN, The Daily News is pleased to join with the rest of the community in welcoming the officers and crew of the cruiser Durban now in port. The Hritish flag looks good to us all and we should like to see it fly at a permanent, naval station here. If that Is riot possible we hope the ships will visit Prince Rupert as often as possible. The oftener the better. RIG MISSOURI DEAL Semi-official announcement that the Rig Missouri deal with the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company will be completed within a few days is good news to the Stewart district in that it indicates there is at least one good mine up the Salmon River in addition to the Premier and that work on it is likely to proceed at once in order to make It a real shipping mine. The Rufus Argenta deal having fallen through because of unfortunate circumstances, doubtless others will take up the property and make it a success. Everything points to great development in the Portland Canal district and the policy of the government In helping to build roads and trails is one that will further tend to make the district DEPUTY MINISTER OF FISHERIES A deputy minister of fisheries has been appointed at Ottaw distinct from the-deputy minister of marine, so that from this time on there will UefdJstinct department of fisheries. This should tend to lend importance to the Industry and should insure greate attention to fishery problems than has been iriven in the nasi. W. A. Found was not wholly a success as director of fisheries but under the present system of promotion In the departments, th logical move was to make hint deputy minister. At any rate there is a directorship now open and it is possible a man acceptable to the fishing industry may be .appointed to that position. 4 INCLEMENT WEATHER While people 6f this district have not exactly enjoyed the in clement weather of late, it is noticed that we are not alone in hav ing bad rains. Yesterday only one baseball match was played be cause of the rain. The previous day there was an outdoor boxing match postponed because of rain and for the past week or mdre there have been intermittent rains in different parts of the con tinent. Apparently the weather has been as bad there as here. We mention this because it is possible Hon. T. D. Pattullo or the Mac- Lean government might be blamed by the Tory spellbinders for the spell of bad weather we have had here lately. All Canada must be shown by the support we give the Hon. Dr. J. D. MacLean that we are determined to make British Columbia grow and expand! Every vote for a Liberal Candidate is a vote for Dr. MacLean. This vote will be an official declaration that we of British Columbia intend to continue to 'lay the foundation for the prosperity of every man, woman and child in this Province. Let us show Canada by our votes that British Columbia is in earnest . . . that having won recognition for equalized freight rates . . . increased and unrestricted use of the Panama Canal . . . and with labor contented and capital unafraid to assist the development of our natural resources . . . we are enthusiastically determined to carry on the development and growth of our Province ... so splendidly evidenced during these busy twelve years of Liberal Administration. Hon. Dr. MacLean and his government are fighting for and successfully establishing the fundamentals of prosperity. This will insure for us factory payrolls . . . markets for agricultural products, the development of potential production which will benefit every person in our province. Hon. Dr. MacLean, the head of the Liberal Government, has the ear of the Hon. Mackenzie King, the head of the Liberal Government at Ottawa; and when we in British Columbia demonstrate by our votes that ve are in accord with Dr. MacLean's sane, safe and sensible policy, we will benefit to a far greater extent than we would if the reins of the government were handed over to the inexperienced hands of Dr. Tolmie. Voting is a serious matter. Disregard petty issues and personal sentiment. For the welfare of this Province ...for your own best interest . . . return Hon.
