DAILY EDITION Wednesday, August 8, 1928 CROP ALMOST SURE A heavy crop on the prairies this year seems now practically assured according to the Canadian National Railways report. If there is no change within the next two weeks, the whole country will show great forward strides. The large amount of money which it will bring into the country and which will be available for purchases, can hardly be estimated yet. Farmers who have large crops will travel to the coast and the elevator here should be busier than ever it has been yet. Every Prince Rupert person should be interested in the prairieJ crops because of the effect it has on business here. This for ihe reason thaWthe lines are now paying an operating surplus, though this is not sufficient to meet the interest on their cost Unless an offer were made whieh would take care these fixed charges he did not see that the province would bent-fit by the sale. Which appears to mean that if the transcontinental want tl E D. and B.C. lines they must pay what those lines cost to build. That seems different from the position formerly taken; that the price shoirftf represent the replacement cost of the roads. If It is not different it must mean that, after all that waa said about the hug t ,jt of conatrilaijB them, no more money waa pat into these railways toan It would take to build them under present conditions.
