They plan taking up some form of handicraft work, such as glove making or rugmajring. We suggest that either men or women might well devote their timt to the perpetuation of the native handicrafts of this part , of the country such a basket making or wood carving. Of these possibly the baake making is the most interesting- The native designs are very artistic and the baskets could be made of such shape and siie as would enable them to be used for moderr purposes. The designs might further be incorporated ii house furnishings and wall decorations. There is every facility here for studying the designs and possibly improving upon them. v The whole idea of taking up handicraft work during the fall and winter months is an excellent one. Groups of girls, married women, mixed groups and even groups of men might find much enjoymetot from making something artistic or useful rather than idling way the time. CUSTOMS OF MEN AND WOMEN It has often been a subject of wonder why men should st idle during winter evenings while women sew or darn or do art needle work. True they add to the prosperity of the tobacconists but that is incidental. If they did some work they would add to the prosperity e I At 1 1 . Vancouver now claims to be the large er&lngporting port in Canada, and claims also that more grain left NTmewnver and Prince Rupert for oversea destinations during the past year than went from all the eastern Canadian ports together. Vancouver not long ago celebrated the shipment from that port of the eighty-millionth bushed of last year's wheat crop. Allowing for wheat shipped from that port since that time, and for the year's shipments from Prince Rupert, it is probably not far off the mark to say that one hundred million bushels of wheat have been shipped via the Pacific during the season. If Vancouver's present claims are correct, something less than two hundred million bushels must therefore have been exported during the year from all Canadian ports. This is leas than half the'amount which was available last fall for export The inference is that, as in former seasons, more than half the crop of last year went out by way way of United States Atlantic ports. Quite evidently reduced grain rates on the Tmueont!oental have not produced the hoped-for result of diverting Canadian grain traffic from the United States ports to Canada's Atlantic outlets. But the splendid record of Vancouver and Prince Rupert is proof that these Canadian ports are the outlets for Alberta's rapidly expanding output of wheat. The westward route is now Canada's greatest wheat export route.
