This gambling spirit is an evil which society. In Prince Rupert nearly everyone is a gambler, and the workers, who have named themselves the protetariat, as bad as the rest, Everyone knows that furs are very expensive. Ladies covet them, rich or poor, but the poor do not get much opportunity to buy. Here is an example of gambling in furs which is true except for the ‘names of those conneeted with the transactions. Jones bought a bundle of furs from a dealer and sold them to Smith, making a profit of 15 per cent.; the prices Jones bought them back, giving Smith a profit of 20 per cent. They were then sold to Brown at a profit of 7 per cent., and bought back again at a profit of 5 per cent. and finally sold to the manufacturer at a profit of 5 per cent. It would take a high school pupil some time to find the actual percentage of profit made in this gambie, In the process considerable over fifty per cent. was added to the price, Similar gambling in other raw products takes place with the result that the final consumer has to pay a big price. a Even without the gambling which takes place the processes of buying and selling make the prices high. an instance, pervades all classes of are just advanced and Take furs again as The trapper sells to the small storekeeper who sells to the small dealer who sells to the larger dealer who sells again to the big dealer who sells to the manufacturer who selis to the wholesaler who sells to the retailer who sells to the wearer. There are eight transactions and in each a considerable toll is taken. Is it any wonder that furs are dear? Purchase in Canada National Obligation. Purchase of Canadian products is a national obligation dur- ing the reconstruction period, Home buying employs labor, maintains wages, stimulates production, and increases prosperity. The Canadian Trade Commissioner says: goods, a year’s * 000 people. Canada exported last year unfinished products to the value o inore than $900,000,000, even one-third of these had been completed in Canada, employ- ment would have been given to at least 125,000 more work people, close to $125,000,000 would have been provided for additional! wages and salaries, and the net value of Canadian products would have been increased by approximately $275,000,000. Canadian imports in 1918 totalled $906,954,900. If half this money had been spent on Canadian products, it would have given employment to an additional 100,000 workmen, with an increased payroll of nearly $100,000,000. To meet its great war debt and reconstruction obligations, Canada must increase production, build up the home market, de- velop export trade. Every dollar spent for goods produced by Canadian labor means better conditions for Canadian workers, and n. goods pur- chased abroad are cheap that take the place of our own labor and our own raw material. —_—_—_ t * .
