The only question is one of how large a majority. Labor also will be represented by several candidates so that there is absolutely no hpe of a Conservative government coming Into power. Premier MacLean will have the opportunity to show what he can do and the Labor and other groups can be satisfied that their interests will propertly safeguarded. An indication of the trend in the south is the fact that the Province newspaper, the only one of the three Vancouver papers to oppose the government, has nothing to say of the twelve years' record of the Liberals but contents iUelf with quibbling over such minor matters as the. interpretation of the Attorney General's speech or the correctness of the Premier when he said ' it was well to leave it for friends of Ottawa to complete the negotiations for the P.G.E. There is no real opposition anywhere. No alternative policy is set forth by the opposition. COMMISSIONER OF FISHERIES It i only recently that Hon. T. D. Pattullo has taken over the position of Commissioner of Fisheries in British Columbia. He has not yet had time to do anything outstanding in regard to the de partment. However, an interesting situation has arisen. The canneries are declared -ta. be -under provincial control and with Mr. rattullo as commissioner, he will be a very active participant in i the fishery situation in thf district in future. It will remembered that it was the local member who arranged for the conversion of the provincial dock here into a fish dock, thus centralizing the halibut business right in the city instead -of banishing it to Seal Cove. The only floats the fishermen ever had were built under his direction at Cow Bay, even though it was really incumbent on the Ottawa government to do that werk. He also offered the Dominion government a piece of waterfront property suitable for floats free of coat if they would construct them. Now, with the increasing responsibility thrown on him by his being made commissioner of fisheries and by the recent decision of the courts in regard to canneries, mueh more may be expected from the local member. There is a possibility that the whole fish control may be turned over to the province in which case Prince Rupert would be in an excellent position with her member as fisheries commissioner. While no one is saying anything personally against Dr. Tolmie, it is being claimed for him that he is a practical and successful farmer and as such should appeal to the agricultural communities. Such is not the case. Dr. Tolmie Is a veterinary surgeon by pro fession and he has farmed a little for a hobby. As far back as most people can remember he has held government positions, such as live stock commissioner, and has officiated as judge at fairs, and at horse races. His farming has not been a success. Without his gov .eminent positions he could not have made a living. For a' number of years he has been a member of the Federal parliament. During the life of the previous government be was "minister of agriculture and ' when that salary failed he took the position of official orgJtnhter for the Conservative party at a very - large salary. In Jhl? way . he was able to maintain his farm. We should nc4 .iKP mentioned these acts were It not that his ton eager friends are holdjtlg him tip as a practical working farmer, which he is not. CONSERVATIVE ATTITUDE The attitude of the Conservative party toward Northern British Columbia is well set forth by the attitude of R. II. Pooley, House leader of the party and first lieutenant of Dr. Tolmie. When dealing with the Timber iloyalties Bill in the Legislature Mr. Pooley moved that the royalties on No. 1 spruce in the Trince Rupert district be increased from $1.10 to $1.50, while leaving all other timber at the lower rate. This was opposed by Mr. Pattullo on the ground that the high grade timber was found only in small quantitien and finding the opposition to his suggestion too strong the amendment of Mr. Pooley was dropped.
