DAILY EDITION, Friday, July 11, 1919. a= a : = Forest Products Of the District. In his speech to the Board of Trade on Wednesday som: parts of the speech of American Consul Wakefield were held ove because of lack of space. These parts will be used editorially from time to time during the next few days. forest products of the district the consul said: “During the progress of the war, now brought to a happy close, we all had an opportunity of appreciating the value of th: forest products which will in future years provide the markets o the world with lumber, pulp and paper. It was discovered denly that spruce was the very best material for the wood require: in aeroplane construction and that the B. C. spruce was quite the best in the market for the purpose. Millions of dollars were spent in getting this spruce out and the results justified the expenditure Just how far the expenditures were justifiable Germany prevent from becoming known by signing the armistice. “What would have happened to Germany in another few weeks would have certainly convinced her that she slightly under estimated the power opposed to her and would have convincing!) demonstrated that the world is not to be the football of any in- dividual power in all the years to come. ca “Today spruce lumber is being shipped from Prince Ruper' and neighboring points to the eastern seaboard and the freigh is equal to the cost of the lumber on the sticks here. mand for your spruce, is it not? And the industry is merely in its swaddling clothes. There is a mill down at Ocean Falls call- ing for an investment of over ten millions. Is that an infant in- dustry? Some infant! Another at Swanson Bay with a very jarg: plant as such plants are listed. With the almost inexhaustibi: supply of pulp wood in this vicinity and the ever-increasing d¢ mand for paper, is it likely that thiS field will be neglected? I'jj say ‘No.’ os) se iit asaihaidiaie “I am sure you will all agree with me that the cily is most fortunate in securing a firm such as that operating the mills Seal Cove. This firm is a distinct addition to the business lit: of this city and you all heartily wish with me that the firm ma long remain here.” Archbishop’s Counsel Regarding Reforms. Vast reforms do not come in a day. The great danger ol the hour is impatience, says F. H. Du Vernet, archbishop of Caje- donia. There will always be inequality in the distribution ot wealth, but excessive inequality is a social injustice. Economic Jaws are not fixed by nature, they can be regulated by man. How to bring about a more equitable distribution of wealth is the prob- lem which must be fated without delay, but it must be faced with wisdom. In scores of different ways the competitive system is giving piace to the co-operative system. To keep pace with these changes the wage system must be modified. The more complex our industrial life becomes the more necessary will it be to com- bine interests. Both on the side of the employers and on th side of the employed will collective bargaining, in an asgending seale, be required until the principle of sectional competition finally gives way to the principle of universal co-operation, and the Christian spirit of brotherly fellowship and mutual servece gets a fair opportunity to express itself in action. It is well to keep before us an ideal system, but it is well also to be clear in our minds as to the best method of approach. The revisionary method aims at crealing public sentiment through the agency of the press, the school, the union. and the church, which will bring such pressure to bear in a constitutional manner that our present inadequate. laws will be revised and pro- gressive legislation enacted which will gradually bring about a more equitable dstribution of wealth. This method avoids th¢ sudden dislocation of the whole commercial world with its inevit able misery. This is the British way. The revolutionary method aims at the sudden overturning 0; the present capitalistic system. It is primarily a destructive policy and so of necessity comes at. once into conflict with constitutional authority, It has no well defined constructive policy, and so even if successful in overthrowing the present order of things years of crude experimenting with visionary theories must lapse before a better order of things could be established upon a firm founda- tion. This is the Russian way. es Parkin & Ward Electric Co. Electric Engineers and Contractors We carry a full line of Electric Ranges, Washing Machines, Vacuum Cleaners, Hot Plates. Grills, Irons, .
