April 20, 1928 LOOKING FORWARD Mackenzie Kinj?, Prime Minister ol Canada addressing the First National Assembly of Liberal women stated that the Liberal outlook and thought was directed toward the future. While not objecting to the Conservative policy of looking backward for lesions to guide our actions, we suggest that it is a good thing to keep our minds directed toward the luiure. That is hope. It is the one blessing that was left in the bottom of Pandora's box when all the evil things had escaped. It is thai which keeps us buoyed up and for ever enjoying the pleasures ol expectancy. The past may be good, the present may be better, but it is dalliance in the rosy fu-une that brings much of the joy of lite. We may not be Liberals in politics but we can all be Liberal in our attitude toward life. Then mix in a small dose of conservatism and we have almost a perfect condition. POKING FORWARD IN PRINCE RUPERT Early in the spring we suggested that this was going to be a ar u hen we should have reason to hope. We repeat that aug-.-.! We may be mistaken, but to us the future looks rosy. We m. I'lime Rupert steadily expanding and improving. That is the first protest mat followed an announcement made recently that the mat ter was under consideration. The situation is this. The library board is very much in the amount of money a vn liable. Last year a slight ad vance was made in the salary of the librarian. It was expected that the city council would increase the grant to cover that amount. They made an Increase but not quite enough. The result is that fewer books can be bought this year than last. If the money is spent In the juvenile section the fiction readers must be curtailed, and the fiction readers have complained In the past that so few new books have been purchased for them. Objectors to the juvenile section say the books are not properly cared for by the young readers, that there is not much time for reading and it interferes with the school studies, that there is not room in the library building for much increase and the elimination of the juvenile section would provide space for the others. The book? in the juvenile section are nearly all n bad shape and much money is needed to mke the collection at ail representative. But the children love fairy tales and many parents canntrt afford to buy them. They look for other children's books which are not to be found in the library. They are in the formative pettbd0f their lives but there are no books to help develop he imagination or influence the character. What is to be done for this juvenile section? We strongly urge those who have opinions for or against the juvenile lending Ifbrary to write us or the library board stating those views and if wsslble suggivunjr a way out of the difficulty.
