The Senate of Canada is out of touch with the people. It is an irresponsible body and obligation to unison with popular opinion. It is even elected, but appoint has no sense of act in nol ments to it are usually political in their nature. Unfortunately it seems to be a difficult matter to disturb the serenity of this wonderful institution because it is necessary to get its own con sent to any reforms or to abolishing it. Possibly obtained if it was understood that the tenure of cupants was to be left undsiturbed, all new on a different basis. During the session just concluded there were the Senate killed. One of these this might be the present ov appointments to be two laws thal was an amendment to the crim inal law of Canada and the other was the Liquor Act, both very important measures. Whether we agree with the wisdom oi these measures or not, we must agree that the people have « right to say what laws shall be present constituted the people Grave Miscarriage Of Justice. In the Smith liquor case under which a man was convicted made, but with parliament as at have very little say. of selling liquor contrary to the Prohibition Act there seems to have been a grave miscarriage of justice. Smith jumped his bai! and was convicted during his abséneée,ibut because the ease was tried by justices of the peace and the information sent to Var couver did not state that there was no police magistrate here at the time, the judge liberated Smith under habeus corpus pri ceedings We know nothing about law and nothing about Smith. bul such a fool reason for quashing a judgment of the local court could have eccurred to no one but a lawver. The judge who tried the case, it seems, must have been much more keen. on getting the man off than on seeing that justice was meted out. It is o; of those flagrant cases where judges err because they have be come afflicted with a bad case of swelled head, What is the use of the city spending a lot of the ratepayer’s money in trying to keep the place decent if the fool judges al Vancouver are their work? New Schoo! Bylaw To Be Submitted. A new school bylaw is to be submitted to the ratepayers in the near future. It is to be a permanent building and will be located on Acropolis Hill near the athletic grounds. That was the only place for it. There is no other site available that weuld giv a proper playground for the children. The welfare of the children should be the one factor in de ciding to erect a new school building. Everyone Lo upset admits that it is needed. Most people admit that Ac ropolis Hill is the best placi for it. If there is any better we should like to hear about it ard lay the matter before the people for their judgment. We wani the best available site, the best possible buil ding in order that the children may get the best possible education.
