Phone 208 'BEN-HUR' STAR AT CAPITOL "Across to Singapore," With Ramon Norarro at His Rest as y Adventurous Sailor; Joan Crnw-! ford, and Ernest Torrence Head One of Season' Rest Casts. Ramon Novarro, hero of "The Student Prince," "Ben-llur" and many other famous plays, comes tonight to the Capitol Theatre in bis latest acreen success, "Across to Singapore' The' new iletro-Goldwyn-Mayer production, directed by William Nigh, is a dramatic romance of the high seas, laid aboard the old clipper ships of New England and the myster-:cus Orient. Novarro plays a young sailor, one of three seagoing brothers, who, in an amazing tangle of love and adventure, figures in desperate runs across the Pacific, mutiny and other graphic incidental to a charming love story. A rotable cast suports the star. Joan Crawford, heroine of "West Point." "Spring Fever" and "Twelve Miles Out," is the heroine of the new sea drama. Ernest Torrence. Anna May Wong and others of note are in the cast. Much of the picture waa taken aboard the famous old clipepr "Narwahl," which sailed for several weeks on a Pacific cruise, 'during which the sea action, including a terrific storm, a raut-jiny and an attack by Oriental gangsters and pirates was filmed. The Singapore scenes are elaborate, including a famous resort of ! sailors in the "melting pot of the Orient," in which practically every nationality on the face of the earth is seen. The story deals with the love 'of two brothers for the sama girl, and rivalry that precipitates a tremendous climax. The entire film has been staged on an impressive scale, whale village having been erected for some of the many spectacular scenes. These large and authentic settings add immeasurably to the realism and fascination of the film.
