BARN BURNED A letter was read from the de-1 partmeot of mines regarding the request for a sampling plant at Prince Rupert, stating that they did not consider the cost would be justified, and that if the government built one in Prince Rupert there would soon bf demand for other throughout the country. It stated that the Dominion Government did this work at Ot tawa free of charge and paid a portion of the freight charges on shipments. Fred Nash, who has fathered this movement from Uie beginning stated that he felt there was a misunderstanding aa to the nature of the plant asked for and the work to be done. The plant asked for here was something in the nature of a commercial proposition while the Ottawa plant was more for testing small samples of ore and advising as to the best kind of treatment fortharTpaTlTCilar ore, The need here was for. a plant where they would, assay, 'test and pay 6utright;for small shipments of nigh grade -ore from, properties and small concerns thus enabling them to finance their own operations. A letter was drafted, Lniore fully explaining the. situat ion and the need here and this will be forwarded to the minister of mines with a request for reconsideration of the project. G. II. Pethlck, district engin eer of Smithers, who was in town, was invited into the meeting and a genera discussion of public works requirements throughout this district took place. Mr. Pethlck informed them that there was money on hand to do the fills at the Copper River Bridge a work for which the Hoard have been agitating all fall and that as soqn as weath er would permit this work would go on apd would be the first un- aeriaKen.v . spring Creek nill'on. the Kalurti road anil 0-Mile Hill on the Lak-else road, both A menace to haul ing operations, will be fixed as gipo.n ns possible, in the soring. Mr. Pethfck 'advised the-lto;irtl to centralize their efforts on the most pressing needs of the dis trict nnd he thought more would be gained than by sending In lengthy lists of works wanted done. He was not very optimistic when asked about the provincial highway, Baying that there were forty miles of heavy work be tween Usk and Cedarvale still to do, , and the, amount of work accomplished each year in the past with the appropriations allotted had averaged only eight miles, and the hardest of the work was still to be done. A vote of thanks was extended to Mr. Pethlck who assured the .Board of his desire to co-operate In bettering conditions In any way possible that finances woulti permit, k ' 0. T.
