(By the Canadian Press) Memories ranging frQm Incidents of life- around the barracks of the Northwest i Mounted Police at MacLeod. Alta., to the aftermath of the South African war when she was In Pre-' toi ia. with hex husband, Brig.-Gcn. 1 Sir Samuel Steele, of Mounted Po lice fame, and who commanded the Stratheona Hone in South Africa,, were recalled by Lady Steele in an interview here. , Lady Steele was married to the then Major Steele In 1890, having T1I?J5u?.on vlal, ttoanat: at MacLeod, Mrs. Macdonnell, wife or inspector a. k. Macaonneii oi . the Mounted Police, who persuaded Sitting Bull to betake himself across the border and stay there by offering to ration him with bul i lets. Indian chiefs "dropping in" for a; cup of tea at the back door were frequent occurrence. Lady Steele recalled. She told of Calf Shirt, a frolicsome Indian with a penchant for carrying around rattlesnakes Inside his shift, who used to call on Mrs. Macdonnell for the occasional cup of tea. One day, on answering his knock at the back door. Mrs. Macdonnell was met by the fearsome spectacle of Calf Shirt's pets, several rattlers, sitting up around their owner, Just by way of a little Joke. "Calf shirt," she said severely, "you've got to put your nasty snakes away or you'll get no teat" High Winds MacLeod was notable for high winds that blew for days on end, and Lady Steele recalled the ludicrous spectacle of the barracks square with chickens dtfglng them selves In and holding on for dear ; life, sometimes for as lenff as tbreeiW?r:;ana days, to keep themselves from be ing swept away. An unwary passer1 by was quite likely to have a terrified fowl blown into his face. M. Many celebrated Indian chiefs were among those who had a partiality for tea, among them Red F, Crow, chief of the Black Fee. He with two others, was brought, to. 0 Montreal for a visit after the re-1 , j belllon. In which they aided theAfrtek Jma the tributes of the white men, by the celebrated sionary Father Lacombc. to "whom a memorial was recently erected at St. Alberta, near Edmonton. MacLeod was the largest Mounted Police station, set among Indian reserves and close to the boundary for 1U protection. The "Mounties" had to be in a constant state of rruuiiiess mi iuiu uuw air a uw-, ment's notice. So high was their state of organization that an entire division could move within half an hour of a summons, ready to be away on duty for a month or more. Eighty OI lie Drive An incident mentioned by Lady Steele concerned a drive of eighty miles undertaken by some of the force to fetch a physician, her own brother, Dr. Harwood. to attend one of her small daugthers, who was taken ill. There "were many Jolly times in the life of the Mounted Police. The men had a rjuardrllle club, and dances wwe attended by officers and their wives and the families of, ranchers who would make m muchi as a day's Journey for festivities at MacLeod. Among the local people was the original of "The Virginian," in Owen Wlster's novel of that name. An event described in-Uie book, the mixing of the babies, actually happened in MacLeod, Lady Steele said. Concerts mustered notable talent, and among those who attended them were Father Lacombe, Sir Frederick Haultaln, Dr. (later senator, de Veber, and Judge, Charles Wood. Western hospitality being renowned, there were occasionally guests who stretched It to thc limit, Lady Steele recalled laughingly. There was one man who stayed for two months, until .his host was obliged to ask him to leave, as he was-setting out on an Inspection ' lour and it was against rules for a stranger to stay in the barracks. There was another, who was given shelter on a night of a blizzard, and this one stayed six months, although the storm quieted down in rather less time. Wild West Shows Wild west shows were thc real thing 'then, with thrilling exhibitions of trick riding by the cowboys and Indians. M,any events in her husband's, career that are recorded in the his- j tory of the "iorco" were recalled by Lady Steele, Ills work in South : : , ! ' " ' , I I I" . , II -.
