Fish Hatcheries And Their Value. There is a discussion going on as to whether fish hatcheries |: are of any value. The Fraser River which has hatcheries has ceased to become an important factor in the salmvn fisheries business. The Skeena on the other hand has produced as much fish this year as ever, F. E. Burke, manager for the Wallace Fisheries, claims tha since the hatchery at Stuart Lake went out of business the runs} on the Skeena have increased. This is denied by Chief Inspector Cunningham of New Westminster, the result of the work.of the hatchery while it was in operation He says that hatcheries are a decided benefit to the fishing in who says thai the big run is terests. - Alice Arm is Coming to Fore. Reports from Alice Arm published on Saturday show tha . the Alice Arm mining district promises to be among the ri h | mining camps of the north British Columbia coast. There are a number of valuable mines already comes news of a rivh gold strike. The Dolly Varden mine is commencing to ship ore and should not take very long for the company to sell enough to pay The presence of a numbe! geting out ore, and now for the mine and railway combined. of American capitalists in the district is giving a filip to the mining industry as a good many claims have been bonded for large sums. Prospector Has at Last Won Out. Prospectors who have gone in to the Portland Cana! moun tains and have staked good prospects have had to wait a for their returns, but they have now come. Anything that carries good ore can be sold if it is anywhere near transportation. The richness of that district would never have been KLOWN had it not been for the persistent work of the prospectors. They are a hardy lot of men who invest their time and strength o1 futures. They take many a gamble and sometimes they win Everyone will be glad to know that the prospectors who have hung on to their claims are now able to cash in on them. Dictatorship Again Established in Hungary. There has been a dictatorship in Hungary for several months Bela Kun was a Boishevist dictator. He professed liberal principles but conditions made it impossibie for him to practis¢ them. He ruled just like other rulers. absolute law. past, His will was practically Now Bela Kun has gone into exile and Archduke Joseph has taken his place. He will have to be a dictator for some time to come, else he will never bring order out of the present chavs. Rule by the people is impossible unless the people are capalde of ruling intelligently. They do not seem to be able to do it in- telligently in Hungery and the result is anarchy, or dictatorsh p. Capacity for government is not a thing that a fall into suddenly. It has to be learned. We measure of self government for many yeasr yet we make ma r mistakes as everybody knows. We have a jot to learn vet before we can evolve anything like a ~eal democracy. if we find self government difficult who have had a good of training along those lines, how must those whe have not had such training blunder and stumble and bring about confusior when they are suddenly given the right which we have slowly wo: and not yet learned to use. nation cal have had a larg dea! =—- 7 one 7 oo — — PHONE | A.B.C.
