News of the Mines AROUND PRINCE RUPERT New Syndicate at Stewart to Develop Tacoma Property; Blackhill Prepares For Winter Work; Independence Closes Down A new syndicate has-jusbtoeen formed at Stewart to develop the Tacoma group of mineral claims on the Porter-Idaho hill. The property consists of six crown-granted claims lying northeast of the Prosperity and Porter-Idaho and adjoining both. The Melvin Mining Co.'s property lies due south and the ore zone on this continues into Tacoma ground. Engineers who examined the Tacoma this fall are reported to have spoken very highly of the future prospects for the property. The property lies in a strategic position and it is not likely there will be difficulty in raising development iunus. The Porter-Idaho tram at Stew-' art is temporarily out of commission, the telephone line over the long span across the glacier, a distance of 4803 feet, having been entangled In one of the ore buckets. The delay in ore delivery Is expected to be only temporary. In preparation for winter work the contract has been let for the construction of winter camps on 'he Blackhill property at Stewart There will be two large cabins on a -ite considerably south of the sum-ner camp and at a lower elevation. Coincident with the camp -. instruction, a crew is being em- loyed extending No. 3 tunnel, i rifting on the ore and leaving landing on the wall an average of foot of ore which runs well over MOO to the ton. This will later be broken down, sacked and shlppel. Owln to lack of power, the Rev- 1 nue Mining Co. has closed down work for the winter on the Indc-1 endence property at Stewart, but 1 will resume Its development pro-; rram next spring. S. P. Corner Must Fall (Continued from page ono) , and not one wutereshed alone, but the watersheds of all the earth are contributing to the ocean of wheat which wUl sweep away this man-made barrier. Let them keen that barrier intict a day too long, and Canada Wll be strewn with rack-ate by the devastating torrent that the Wheat Pool Is creating. At this very moment wheat is geminating in the spring In other fandr, it la appnncWng maturity In the summer suns of others; It is being harvasted In still others where autumn is approaching. The stoppage of the flow from Canada has hit sf lirmlfltM Via flnw ffrnm pIjw- whfte. and should that flow from other sources suffice, as conceivably it ctn be made u do, the Wheat Pool, preparing a feast, will be confronted by a tragedy. This thing has been tried before. "Corners" in wheat have been effected, but Nature has always defeated them In the end. There is a storry, "The Pit," by Frank Nor-rls, founded on actual happenings when speculators in the United States have done Just what the Wheat Pool Is doing dammed one of Nature's great life-streams In order to force prices to a higher level. Listen to tnh about the leading character in Norrls' story a man who had effected a corner in wheat and set a price below which he would not sell a man who had his actual counterpart In life: "First In one place, and then in another the new harvest was com ing on the market. It was not the brokers, traders and speculators who fought him now; It was the very Earfh Itself. Demand and supply, these were the two great laws the wheat obeyed. Almost blasphemous In his effrontery, he had tampered with these laws, and had roused a Titan. He bad laid his puny grasp upon Creation, and the very earth herself, the (treat mother, feeling the touch tf the cobweb that the human insect hail spun, had stirred at last In her sleep and sent her omnipotence moving tnrougn tne grooves of the world, to find and crush the dis turber of her appointed courses. The new harvest was coming In; the new harvest of wheat, huge be yond possibility of control; so vast that no money could buy It, so swift mat no strategy could turn it. "The avalanche, the undiked Ocean of the Wheat, leaping to the lash of the hurricane, struck him fairls. in the face. The wheat had broken from his control. For months he had, by the might of his smgie arm, neia 11 oacic, but now it rose like the upbtilldihc of a colossal billow. It towered, towered, hung poised for an mataht, and men, wun a tnunaer as 01 we grind and crash of chaotic words, broke upon him. burst through the Wheat Pit and raced past him, on and on to the eastward and to the hungry nations." Y'.s. it is a michtv. a murdet-miii drama that is being played' by the ""cm wi nt vshmuum. mm .even if, within the few short uwl in which It Is oosslble, the spectre of famine overseas sends orices mounting to the Wheat Pool's mark, the momentary success will be dearly bought, for higher prices will precipitate a flood of planting In other lands, and competition on a mightier scale will face the Wheat Pool In the coming year.
