DARK SPOTS ON MOON Absolute Desolation Is Condition Suggested by Telescopic View The dark spots which are plainly -visible on the moon's disk are the lunar "seas.' They form the face of the "man In the moon" tnd iQutlme the profile of the im in the moon." rabbit, frog, donkey and another girl, the "girl raiding" are other well known figures Imagined in the full moon. In the usual view, however, these latter figures are not right side up. to see them best it is neces- firy to Invert either the moon or tin- observer. Long ago the dark spots on the moon were supposed to be bodies of water, and the different spots wrre given fanciful names, such as hi sea of Srenlty and the Bay ol Rainbows. These names are still in use. although astronomers are I'rrtaln that the spots are not bodies of water. So far as we know, the moon's surface Is completely devoid of water, ana or air aiso. ana mere-fore of life ot any kind. The lunar seas are relatively flat regions where the rock Is darker than in most other places. According to a theory which seems plausible, the s(a.s were originally great elliptical degressions In the moon's surface as bright as the rest and surrounded by rings or mountains. At a later time lava welled up from the Interior and overflowed the low places. Many of the Irregularities were leveled bfr the hot lava, and others were submerged. As the dark, molten stuff cooled, fairly level surfaces were formed. Thus the seas, according to this amount. Viewed with the telescope the lunar surface exhibits more var-)"v than eye alone can see. Thousands of mountain rings, the lunar craters, are scattered over the surface, and from some of tli' m bright streaks, called rays, radiate. The rays are best seen near full moon, but the craters are most conspicuous near the quarter pnasc. ureat cracks in tho surface can be seen also. In General the appearance with the telescope suweats absolute desolation bare rocks and nothing else. SUGGESTS TAXING CATS AS WELL AS DOGS IN CANADA TORONTO, Oct. 1: A Nlavl-nora (Ont.) correspondent of the yironH suggests that cats should be taxed and destroyed, as the law decrees shall be done with dogs. "Wherever one eoes in the coun try one runs across stray cats. Bomo probably left bv loving owners at the end of a summer outing, some Dropped by the road by equally lov-ln;; owners who find apartments not convenient for nets, and some Come frnm h.irns nvrf lnwinir with large families ot kittens. Many of i uipse cats prefer the call of tne wild to the call of a mistress. "These domestic cats (never really tame) are becoming a very Rrcat menace throughout the country, and In many places con-nervation societies are Including them In their list of pests and asking for their destruction. This Is true in the cities and villages also, especially In the case of bird lovers. A season may be shadowed by the tragedy In your trc6s or shrubs: a host of birds a cat breakfast before you can make a rescue." tu . .. Steamship Movements For Vancouver 8undays-ss. Pr.
