By DON OSBORNE With the diversion of tiro Ne-chakn River into a 25-foot wide small 1.500-foot long tunnel rut . one through the solid rock of a can wail the worm s greatest potential electrical power site is, of headed towards full-acaft: i ciuea development. I The Kemano-Nechako power i development, when completed, I think supply the power for the Aluminum Company of Canada's $300,000,000 aluminum project under construction at the rU d Indian village of Kiti-mat. the Recently a dynamite blast set by Mannix Construction Company supervisor Curly Crist-man opened up the diversion Iminel and moved the Nechako River out of its ancient bed. The now flows through the canyon wail and leaves the river bottom exposed for construction to go ahead with the job of "waterproofing" the bed and evp'-ting the 200-foot dam which bottle up the Nechako water systvm from its eastern outlet th" Fraser River. The construction crews hope have the dam at 80 percent completion by this time next year, lint the flwding of the 200.0(10 acres in the watershed w! not begin until 1955. When completed the dam will cause the water level to rise 171 forming a lake stretching miles vast and west. At its eastern end the lake be blocked from its natural release by the Nechako Canyon dam. At the western 'end it will have an outlet through a ten-mile long tunnel which will be built underneath a mountain r:r.ge. This tunned, with a drop 2.600 feet, will carry the water the Kemano River where the power will be generated In four power houses and carrred by a 48-mile transmission cable to the aluminum plant. The Kemano-Nechako power rite, which was finally decided upon after a million dollar survey, has been described as having the greatest power potential any place in the world. It's potential power output, under the pfesent development Is estimated at 1.640,000 horsepower. This is greater than the 1,250.000 horsepower digested by the world's largest aluminum production plant at Arvida, Quebec, which produces 400.000 tons of aluminum annually. i Last Call For Voters Final chance to get on this ! year's voters' list is today aitcr ', which the official list will be closed for another year. 1 1 Thirty-three new registrations j ' have been received but "this Is still below the mark." believes City Clerk R. W. Long. The city clerk's office remains open tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. to receive last-minute registrants. Last year's list totalled 2805 property owners, householders and licence-holders. CRli-lY REMINDERS 'Continued from page 3) a wealthy French youth who Save his inherited fortune to the poor, moved to Egypt and became a saint. His bones were returned to the French village of Motte-au-Bois. During the pestilence, ergot victims who visited St. Anthony's shrine got well. As a result the Order of St. Anthony was established. People went for I he saint's blessing. At the same time they were fed with good, clean bread. Not until the 18th century was the ergot puzzle solved and the sickness traced. The pestilences have been dying out, and where the sickness does break out, it is less severe because of better medical treatment. In many countries there are laws against permitting ergot rye to get into mills. The little French outbreak mystifies the ergot experts. "It could hardiy be a farmer wanting to make money on bad rye," said Dr. Kenneth Ericson, an official of one of the leading I ergot concerns of New ork. The FOR RENT Sleeping room.
