It is a long ery from the prison camps of Germany to a farin in central British Columbia british Columbia is romantic doubtless also is a German prison camp in a different way, but this romanee embraces both. At the outbreak of the recent wa: among the thousands of youts nen Who offered their services to their country, were many who had the “baek to the land” méve- ment strongly mstilied into the. ‘system, and which they are totia, carrying into action, as is évi- denced by the thousands of re. turned soldiers who are taking up land in the prairie provinces «us well as in British Columbia, The story in point, however, is told by Prof. J. M. Macoun of the Biological Division, Geologieat Survey of the Canadian Govern- ment, Ottawa, A nephew of the professor's, Geo. Scott, formerly of Winnipeg, with others, while a prisoner at Geisen prison camp in Germany, while considering us their respective futures at the lermination of the war, he witli ten or twelve other boys conteived the idea that they would lotate on the Jand together and Oéntral British Columbia was selected as their haven of hope and rest. It Was further agreed that should one or more of them escape he or they should act in the capacity of advance agents and find de- simable locations for all. This good fortune fell to the lot of a soldier named Corker, who es- caped from prison in the summer of 1918 and made his way to England, thence to Canada, when he proceeded to his home, which strange enough to say was also in British Columbia. After a brief visit to his home, upon investiga- tion he made the seleétion for his colony in the vicinity of Vander- hoof, and it is assumed by this time that he has been joined by the other parties to this romantic compact. Prof. ested Macoun is keenly and has done much im- portant work in this section of British Columbia in the colleetion of Flora, ete., which the province furnishes in lavish profusion. In his work he is usually accom- panied by Mrs. Macoun who is also well known in Canada for her descriptive writings. inter- PRIZE WINNERS AT THE FAIR (Continued from Page Four).
