H. B. Smith, who constructed ' the city's first waterworks in ' 1889. visualized the dam which would store enough water to sat- j isfy Vancouver's needs. The $8,503,000 dam is being built in a narrow, deep canyon j where the Capilano cuts through solid rock, j When it Is finished in Decern- ber, 1953, 185.000 cubic, yards of I concrete and 1.600 tons of steel will have gone into it. Then, when the spill gates are closed, I a man-made lake will be filled with 13,C03,UK)MO gallons of mountain water. The domestic water outlet wili supply 220,000,000 gallons ol ; water for the city ami surround-1 ing district daily. j Because of the narrowness of ; the canyon, preliminary work on the dam has to be done almost completely from the air, with ciei.icks and overhead wires. top of the canyon, the contrac tc:s have built the shortest railway in the province. A moving platform, officially noted by the Department of Transport as a railway, raUles! up and down a 300-foot section j of greased beams to and from the water's edge. Work is being coVnpleted on a 31'z-foot wide tunnel blasted through a 963-foot section of mountainside. The river will o diverted through that while the dam is being built. All trees and debris bei'iw the water line of the man-made lake are being cleared away to prevent water contamination. The dam will be called the Cleveland Dam, for Dr. E. A.
