Nelsor at the Board of Trade meeting held Friday night in regard to the Groundhog branch line of the Grand Trunk Pacifie Railway: Whereas, the G, T. P. Railway is passing under the control of the people of Canada; And whereas, it is of importance that this railroad line a dats pressing should be made, at as early as possible, a revenue produce so that the people of Canada may e relieved of any undue finance! burden, and so that the industria and business activity which woul be concomitant with such a con dition of affairs might result; And whereas, branch lines act- “feeders” and tapr producing territories are of first importance in making railway lines revenue produ: Field for Enterprise. And whereas, such a field for enterprise exists in close prox- imity to the main-line of the G T. P.. namely, the Groundhog Mountain coal fields which em- brace an area which geologists of the highest reputation, ineluding experts of the geological survey, ing as freight estimate at about seventy miles to forty miles, in which, they re port, are located coal beds, the quality of which varies from bi bm ee o- PR. And whereas, within the zone to be industrially influenced by he coal development referred t« there are tremendous latent Sibilities especially in a minin line which could be safely relied upon to develop many industrial ‘enters upon the opening up of the coal to use by transport to the existing line of the G, T. P. National Question. And whereas, further, the que tion of fuel supplies under the protection of the British flag has an important bearing, at the pres- ent time, on our national life; And whereas, the construction of a line of railway from the Groundhog Mountain coal beds to the existing line of the G. T. P would involve a line of from 14 miles upwards according to the point selected as the most feasible for making connection; And, whereas, such an under- taking would bripg a practically pos- one unlimited supp of the first qualily of coal within reach of all points along the G. Therefore, be it resolved, Board of Trade urge upon Government of Canada that mediate steps be taken to have an investigation made on the cround, of the most feasible route by which a railway line of stand- ard gauge may be built to con- nect the Groundhog Mountain coal flelds with the existing line of the G, T.
