The school attendance in the city is an eye-opener to mal) who have been talking as if Prince Rupert was still a village. it is a record which even in the palmy days before the war was not} approached. Now the growth of the city bids fair to continue) steadily. Some people venture the statement that Ky this time next year there will be ten thousand people in the city. That prophecy seems a little too rosey. What seems sure is that the population will have increased very materially, but no one can say how much. Nurses’ Training Schoo! at Hospital. A nurses’ training schoo! is to be established at the General Hospital, There is in charge now a teacher that is equal to any they have in Vancouver or Victoria and most of the opportunities are just as good here as in the larger cities. With a maternity ward in the building, pupil nurses are able to get every branch of training, excepting only that haying to do with infectious diseases. It is probable that in the very near future some ar- rangement will have to be made to include those in the hospital curricula. There are few professions where a lady may be of so much benefit to the race as in the nursing profession. It is one that stands out above most other professions, the members being al- ways respected because of their calling. The chief complaint in the past has been the long liours the women have had to work. That is now being overcome end it is hoped to initiate the eight- hour day here very soon. Once a girl has had a training in nurs- ing she has a profession that will always command good pay and which gives her a social standing. Gymnasium Badly Needed Here. A gymnasium is badly needed here. That is generally recoz- nized. The difficulty has been to get one started and after start- mg to keep it going. Last autumn just as the people were getting interested |) the matter, the epidemic of influenza struck the town and struck so hard that no one thought of anything else for some tirnfie. Then came Christmas business and by the time it was over it was thought hardly worth while doing anything as the season was nearly gone. This year there seems to be nothing to interfere with going right ahead. If the fair directors are willing to allow the build- ing to be used and the committee is willing to get out and work, the gym should be an accomplished fact in the near future. Canada Cutting Another Melon. This Canada is a joint stock company with eight million shareholders, electing a Boar! of Directors called a Parliament and committing the adminisiration to a small executive com- mittee. Each citizen invests his labor and intelligence for the benefit of the Company. Now the Company, being faced with extraordinary and pressing caj ital expenditures offers a new issue of stock at par to the sharehclders, who deserve first considera- tion. No other persons have as good a knowledge of the resources of the Company. No foreign money-lenders can appreciate fully the morale of the Company. The shareholders were present once before when a melon was cut, and they liked the flavor. It re- quires no genius in prophecy (o declare that this second privilege will be accepted eagerly by all those associated with the Company who have either much or little to invest. ist Prize $200 Cash. 2ud Prize £100 Cash. 3rd Prize $50 Cash.
