Therefore, it is interesting to hear that the company's great new Canadian Chemical' Co. Ltd. plant at Edmonton, where oil and gas is available, is to carry on with the processing of the pulp produced at Prince Rupert, into such finished products. Of course, the Edmonton plant will, by no meiins, bea ble to consume all the pulp produced here and the large bulk of it will go, as originally planned, to (he company's chain of plants in the United States. In time, as the Canadian market develops, more and moire of the local product will be further finished within Canada. ; Announcement of plans for the $50,000,000 plant at jKd'monton, says the Vancouver Province, has spe'cial significance for Canadians. The paper con-tiniies: ' ' Announcement of plans for a $S0 million plant at Edmon- tiji) by Canadian Chemical Co. Ltd.. a subsidiary of Celane.se Corporation of America. has sperial significance for Canadians. In addition to a wide variety of industrial chemicals, the new plant will manufacture cellulose acetate, staple fibre and lilament vain. The fibre and filament yarn will be available to Canadian textile mills for both civilian and defence use and we nuiv look forward to clothing, fugs and cloths that are less expensive and highly durable. The great significance of the development, however, is the fact th-at the new plant will not be merely a producer of a raw product which is quickly hustled out of our country for processing; elsewhere. It will use 75.000 gallons of petroleum gases per day from Aiberta oil fields to fuel its power plants. Hiah alpha cellulose for the operation will be supplied bv the Prince Rupert plant of Columbia Cellulose Ltd.. another affiliate of the Celanese Corporation. Canadian workmen will then transform these basic products Into valuable industrial chemicals, including formaldehyde for B C.'s plywood giue market, which will replace imports from the U.S. From the forest and gas well to the sales counter these operations will be handled by Canadians for Canadians. In this instance we are keeping the whoie production line in our own country. Thi1-' is something of a milestone in our effort to become a preat industrial nation as well as a producer and exporter of raw materials. mellow peacefulness and restful Htnutoi-hert.
