Various Ideas Advanced to Enforce J Payment of Licence Activities of peddlars, some of whom it was claimed were operat-1 ' ing here without paying the re- ' ( quired $50 licence, were discussed , j by the city council last night, the I l matter being brought up by Aid.! I Macdonald who urged that, if pos- j who were legitimately in business, ' the present fee be increaeed say to j $300 which he understood was the I charge in Vernon. City Solicitor Jones pointed outi ' that the peddlars' licence was Urn I ited under the Act to $50. If Vernon ' . was charging more than this for a i licence, it was doing so illegally, j The difficulty, Aid. Collart said, was to get hold of the people who were peddling without a licence, j There should be co-operation with the authorities by the public. Aid. Pullen did not think that the city should have to chase the ped-dlar In order to get him to pay his licence. If he was found peddling without a licence, he should be haled Into police court and punished without any formalities. If it was known that this was the practice here, there would not be so much peddling without licence. City Solicitor Jones informed Aid Un Claud Reii-rud. Aid. Linzey thought the city had been too lax in the matter. There were peddlars galore here now. Aid. Rudderham thought the matter was one for the police to deal with. Mayor Orme felt that the Retail Merchants Association might pass the word aloneto the authorities. The merchants were about the first to know about the activities of peddlars and' they were the most interested. the council. WEATHER IMPROVED this A'car So Far Has Had Much Less Rain and Much More Sunshine Than Last tee, authorized the Northern B. C, Power Co. Ltd. to proceed with in stallation of a system of ornamen tal street lighting in that part of the business section which now has festoon lights, i The understanding is that the city shall pay no more for the lighting service with the new system than is charged at present with the festoons. Under the agreement, the installation is to be made free of charge to the city. The matter was brought up with the reading of a letter from the power company Suggesting that the No definite action was taken by ttme wag now opportune to proceed with the installation of the oma mental lights. Immediately sanction was given by the city, the company was prepared to go ahead with the installation of some forty .-tandards in tluft pert of the business section which now had the festoons. Aid. S. D. Macdonald. chairman f the utilities committee, told the council of a conference which the committee had toad with J. J. Lit tle, manager of the power company. The committee had insisted that he lighting service should cost no more to the city under the new system than was now charged and this !iad been agreed to by the company. Ihere would be a much better de-ree of Illumination with more ef ficiency than at present and it -vould cost the city no more. If tire -ysterh should not prove satisfactory it need not be used and the ilty could go back to the old system without being out a cent. He noved that, under these conditions, '.he company be authorised to go head with the installation proposed. Aid. Collart seconded this motion. Aid. Pullen Inquired If this was to be the extent of the new sys-.em or if more installations might 'oe made from time to time. Aid. Macdonald replied that, under the agreement, the company was to nakc further Installations when-( ;ver asked to do so by the cij,y. Black. Aid. Plllsbury Inquired as to particulars of the new standards and lamps and was told by Aid. Macdonald that these were to be of the very latest design. There would be a single lamp standard with reflector. When the people saw these new standards and lights, Aid. Macdon ald felt they would be well satisfied with them and other sections of the city would also wish them, It was brought out by Aid. Aid. Macdonald said that the idea I was to extend the installation of J the standards as circumstances! and finances would permit. It would be merely necessary for the property owners desiring to have standards installed to petition for them. The festoons would come down on Installation of the standards, Aid.
