July 25, 1930 t Some of the officers and men of the visiting cruiser are much puzzletl at the local political situation. While they are much interested in their own British political situation it is difficult for them to understand the Canadian line-up. By birth and training most of the visitors' are Conservatives but if they had a vote here probably the majority would vote for Hanson because by doing so they are supporting the new British Empire movement which their own party at home backs. Liberalism in Canada today means trade within the Empire whereas Conservatism means putting up a tariff barrier against Great Britain as well as all-other countries of the world. Already the Liberal party has placed a tariff barrier against all countries which refuse to grant reciprocal privileges. This applies,, mote , particularly to the United States because that country is, such. a close neighbor. It onsets tne recent raise m tarui against tnis country imposed at Washington. The recent Canadian law, generally known as the Dunning budget, transfers trade privileges from United States to Great Britain and other parts of the Empire and already the effect of it k being seen in the improvement of trade between Canada and those countries. While the visitors to Canada just now are puzzled, Canadians are not. They realize the situation and will show by their votes Monday that they approve the change. SKIDEGATE HOSPITAL DAY Editor, Dally News: From an article appearing in the News of July 18, an impression Is apt to be gathered that the doctor received the proceeds of the annual "Hospital Day" held at Queen Char lotte City on July 1. This impression is quite erroneous. As most of the local people know, the proceeds of the "Hospital Day" are devoted entirely to upkeep of the building It self and to necessary equipment or equipment renewals. This responsibility belongs to the hospital society which vests control of its affairs in a board of directors, elected annually. To those who contributed and are not conversant with the "modus operandi" of hospital administration here, It Is only fair that they should know that their donations are devoted entire ly to the hospital. Current expenses are met out of curmt revenue. This part of the administration concerns the resident doctor. Taking this opportunity of thanking all those who helped ln so many ways to make this community effort a success. Skidegate Inlet Hospital Society. G. A. C. ROBERTS, Sec. Skidegate, July 23. Eastern Railway Company gives the companj authority to build only as far as the Finlay River "at a point at or near Fort Grahamc." Whether the railway will ever be extended into the agricultural part of the Peace River country rests not with the Consolidated or with Mr. Stevens bat' with tHe Legislature of British Columbia. The second point is that even if the railway in question does turn its nose southward and eastward and does" eventually reach the Peace River country, Vancouver doesnt need to worry. If this city with its population of a quarter of a million, its great railways, elevators, docks, factories, wholesale houses and other commercial equipment can't hold Its own against Stewart with its 500 people and its primitive facilities, it deserves all that is coming to it.
