These statements being that the fishing industry here was a success, and that road work was still continuing this not being generally true. Whereas the true facts of the case are, that in the Queen Charlotte City district fishing was a failure, and the government road work only of abort duration averaging at most from seven weeks to three mouths, "And whereas the statements of the engineer are as untrue in fact as they are unjust to those whose earnings have been and are still very meagre, owing to lack of fish, and the means of ordinary employment. Owyer, provmcaftfaidistnct engineer, is quoted as saying that people on the Islands are pretty good this fall, that people oa the Islands have been working all sammer, and road work still continuing lor a few weeks. Evidently. Mr. Gwycr Is referring to the nartfc end, and it may be true to that part of the Islands, which I hope Is true. .With regftid to the southern part it's not true, as to work on the roads or distress tbJough unemployment. Many of the men worked on the roads two months and one week only, others only aeven weeks to date. Men with large families worked about three months. Since August no work waa done south of Tl BL untti three weeks ago when three men and a team part tinx have been filling pttoh holes for the beenfit of car traffic Had Mr Owyer consulted the merchants and others in touch with conditions here he would 'not be ao optimistic. The writer knows lot many here who ate living on j small mean and who at times go ' hungry as they oaVe nc means, ana' no credit. All are property owners If Mr. Owyer could find a month's wejrk for the needy he would be doing a charitable deed, where? bis opttnttm may estate severe suffering. ' T. R. DAVEY. THINKS SNOWDEN RIGHT Bdltor, Daily News The Imperial Conference that baa attracted so much attention in 1 displaying the opinions of our wise 1 men Is dae for a little checking up. Philip Snowden and associates j must be tight or they are wrong. As I understand Snowden s viewpoint is that the world evolves under economic stress and that all nations are active economic factors in a common world market. If it were true that we could obtain prosperity through political juggling we Would have prosperity aU the time as prosperity is better for the politician. No one likes poverty. Prosperity can only be achieved through active trade and active trade can only be maintained through world relationship. World relationship can only be main tained through cordial dealings and mutual exchange, and all of this can only be realized when the world is at work, producing, buying and selling In that restricted world market. . Now a market is only a market when consumers are there with cash to purchase for consumption. And as previously stated the world's market is a restricted market, and asan Imperial trade pact would further divide and curtail, I am inclined to think that Snowden is sound in standing by the old ship of economic determination. Though public opinion seems to be mounting against him, Father Time wiU vindicate him. Thanking you for space, O. B. CA8EY. AUSUSTICE PARADE Bdltor, Dally News: Referring to the letter in yester dayfe New. IwM under the impression I saw a Naval Commander in the Parade. Sorry if I have been mistaken. I only saw one unit commander saluting Major Tinker at the "fall out." At the command "Unit Com manders" (plural please, Mr. Printer) "dismiss," Unit Commanders should fall out, march smartly up to the C. O. Parade, halt three paces away, take time from the right hand oflcer, salute and then fade away. This was not done except the fade away" part. A. propect after hearing an address by A. B. McAllster, Toronto, railway secretary, who gave a brief address on the work of the organisation. W. II. Tobey, chairman of the committee, also spoke briefly. Mr. "McAllster explained that, according to the constitution of the Y. M. C. A., any self-respecting person might Join. It was non-national, non-sectarian and non-denomlna-tlonal in character. He read the pledge which should be taken by any person wishing to Join, a pledge that any Christian person could take. The speaker said that during the 32 years in which he had been ai member of the organization no re- j llglous difficulties had been encountered. The aim of the organisation was to substitute worthy effort for those things which were less desirable. Another aim was to discover and train for leadership. It wasu permanent organization. Man'to-dependent clubs had been' started, operated for a brief time and failed. There was no doubt of the achievements back of the Y. M. C. A. In reply to T. II. Johnston, Mr. McAllster said the Y. M. C. A. members had visiting privilege with other similar organlzaUons In any part of the world. In answer to Oeorge Munro, the speaker explained that the building.
