ITALY, May20 Twen- ty-four years' work was needed to finish the ermine and lace sur- pllce given to the Pope by the Italian Oovemment on the occasion of the eighth, anniversary of the Pontiff's coronation. The work was done here at the lace school on the Island of Burano. All told. 130 people worked on the surplice. It was begun In 1900. and finished in 1924. Several months ago, by order of the government, the task of adapting It for pontifical use was begun. Its value is Inestimable. When the lace work was started the design was sketched on special paper and then divided Into thirty pieces. Each piece was given to four women, the most skilful of the lace school, each of whom had a special task to perform. Burano has a world-known name for lace-making. In the Mid- die Ages the little Island, was al ready widely renowned for its nro duct. When the Venetian republic fell the art declined. In 1872. through the Initiative of a Vene- started on the island. Queen Mar-gherita gave It her patronage. From that year on Burano returned tb its ancient glory.
