DAILY EDITION. © Permanent Improvements Needed Here Badly. What is needed in Prince Rupert more than anything else is to provide for the essentials of modern life. Those essentials are education, roads and sanitation. They are the outstanding features that differentiate between civilization and savagery. As a pioneer settlement on the outskirts of civilization it was not, to be expected that the essentials of modern life would be forth- coming. There had to be the days of infancy when the town was really only acamp. As the city grows older, however, she expecis to slough off the swaddling «lothes and to expand and assume gradually those features which are more permanent and which bespeak adolescence. . Prince Rupert is growing up but she is developing slowly. There is little of that permarency which we should ali like to see. Some grading has been done, but the streets are not yet really fit to drive on. There are schools but not one that is per- manent in eharacter; there are sewers of a crude kind but not many. We need the essentials. There is an air of prosperity and improvement manifest everywhere throughout the city. The buildings are nearly ali in a state of good repair that louked far otherwise last year. The business section espeeially ha- been improved and in the res:- dential districts there are man new buildings either in course of construction or completed. l.verything points to progress. Business prospects are good in the city. What with ship repairing, shipbuilding, an inc-ease in cold storage facilities, in- creased fish buyers, more sti rage capacity, new freight sheds, increased shipping, and growt: of the neighboring mining com- munities, everything spells progress. The tourist business has increased, the farming comm: nity of the interior is growing up fast. Is it any wonder that pcople have faith in the place? We must also show our faith by keeping in line with the spirit of the time. To do so we mus’ have roads, both in the city and outside; we must have sewers in order to preserve the health of the people and we must have schools, permanent in character and buildings that will be a credit to the community. There was a time when the property owners of the city weie here, in many cases, for the p :fpose of making a stake and thea getting out. That day is pas’. The people who are here today are here to stay, or should be. They now are able to take a pride in the place, in its growth and development. Play Necessary as Well as Work. Play is as necessary as work in the development of manhoo:. In Prince Rupert we go onthe water for our summer recreation, but in the winter we have to p ovide for the young men and boys and even for the older people. There is a big building here that has been loaned for the purpose of a play room. It is necessary, however, to fit it up properly for the purpose. On Tuesday the people are to be asked to contribute for this purposes Monday night at 8 all the people wh» are interested in the cause are asked to meet in the Board of Trade rooms to map out a plan cf campaign for the following d«.. Everyone interested is invited. Everyone can help. We besp:ak for this cause the hearty sym - pathy and help of the whole community. $400 GIVEN IN CASH.
