Proprietor I'lfth Street. Phone 20S To put It simply, yet truthfully, It was a memorable treat whlc,h the Ladles' Music Club afforded music lovers of Prince Rupert last night at the United Church in presenting; 'a recital by Vlggo Klhl of the Toronto Conservatory of Music, one i of Canada's foremost pianists of the day. It is difficult to. avoid superlatives In commenting upon the I excellent hour and a half program (which Mr. Klhl rendered to the 'keen delectation of an audience which practically filled the auditorium and which was not hesitant in expressing its approval and appreciation of his work. Mr. Klhl's program was a versatile one which gave him opportunity to display a fine technique and a rare touch of the keyboard. In the crescendos and the prestlsslmos. his execution was vigorous and exact. In the planlsslmos and adagios, he exhibited a control that was virtually faultless. Withal, It was a performance that a community so far afield Is rarely favored enough to enjoy. Mr. Klhl took for his opening number that gentle though exacting Prelude and Five Part Fugue in C sharp minor (Well Tempered Clavichord Vol. 1 No. 4) by Bach. Schubert's Serenade, Liszt af- , rangement, that great melody, executed with fine eloquence and deep feeling, completely won -the aud-iencc and proved one of the outstanding numbers of the program. The demand for an encore which followed prompted Mr. Klhl to give Beethoven's Andante in F. Major, with its characteristic melody, vagarious basses and wandering trebles, and a fitting prelude to that old favorite, Beethoven's 8on-iata In C Major, peihaps better known as the Waldstein Sonata, which was to follow. It was in this Impetuous sonata, with its alter nate statellness, rippling melodies land picturesque climaxes, that Mr Klhl was enabled to demonstrate the great power of his technique and the wonderful effectiveness of his control. , A long and varied number was given over to Chopin music, often difficult to appreciate than which, however, there is none more loved .hen comprehended. First came he Nocturne in D Flat Major, Op yi. No. 2, liquid sweet under Mr. Kihl's hand whfch made every note come clear and every tone come me Three etudes Op. 10. No. 12 in C Minor. Op. 10. No. 3 In E Ma lor and Op. 10, No. 7 in C Major fol- owM. These were invigorating and the last rcalloplng number was par ticularly Impressive owing to the technical skill of the artist. Barcarolle Op. CO, concluding number of this suite, was more virile than its title might imply. At this point. Mr. Klhl Interjected for an encore an easily comprehensible arrangement by Rubensteln of the ever popular "Turkish March." Daring modern harmony gave novelty to Trlana from "Iberia" by Albcnlz. Perhaps, it was Mr. Klhl's treatment that made It understandable for, although unfamiliar to Imost, It was spontaneously appreciated. Valse de Concert Op. 47. Glazoun-off-Clumcnfcld, was a. happy culminating number. Forcefully work-ling the whole keyboard, Mr. Klhl 'demonstrated all his talents in an obvious refrain, cleverly punctuated j with skilful denouements. I It was a testimonial to Mr. Klhl's fine execution throughout of an lentifcly memorized program, with no relieving numbers, that his I audience was loath to rise even when the program said finis. His 1 hearers could have listened much longer but the fact that they could not possibly made for even greater appreciation. C.
