Proprietor ' ' Fifth Street Phone 208 THE DAILY NEWS Friday, February 21, 1930 Many Suggestions Put Forward At Skidegate Meeting With End of Salmon Conservation in View SKIDEGATE, Feb. 21. On Tuesday evening of this week ....... a mass meeting . of fishermen was held at Skidegate nr. i i iL- XT 1.1 TJ..!i.i-l. r1 Mission unaer tne auspices oi tne iuruierii diiush vui-umbia Salmon-Fishermen's Association. H. E. Green presided and Capt. C. Valley acted as secretary. The meeting was called to protest against the Howe regulations and to advance proposed substitute regulations for consideration of both the provincial and Dominion governments. Many grievances against the present fisheries department were also aired Tne fisher-" men stood solid In their demands meet at Skidegate for examlnaUon for the freedom of the seas. iand why the examination was not The meeting opened with the held, reading by Capt Valley of letters; Farther Requests , wmcn had been received from T. Russ challenged any one to show one log jam that stopped salmon from ascending the streams. Log Jams, indeed, he contended were a pro tection for the salmon and their spawn and fry. It was charged at the meeting that $1000 had been squandered in blowing out log jam at Atli Inlet where as a matter of fact, there was no salmon run. Oik-of the fishermen at the meeting said that a fisheries officer had laughed at him when be had protested against using dynamite ir. the streams. Shore Patrol It was alas suggested at the meeting that merf bo placed on shore, as well as on boats, for fishery protection work at the head of Oumshewa Inlet,' Church Creek rod Kcho Harbor. It is believed that shore pa trot of these waters will be more effective. Another suggestion was that large boulders or cement blocks be placed at the mouths of creeks to prevent night poaching with seines. I A. Jones advanced the suggestion thaf all seines be done away with j and that only gill nets be permit-, ted. He contended that seines de-' stroyed everything and that gill nets held only a certain amount of fish and took only a uniform size of salmon. If seines were to be continued. L. Watson proposed that all live rollers be done away with as this method of hauling In the seine encouraged poaching. Sol Wilson held that bears on the Queen Charlotte Islands reatroyed thousands of salmon out of the spawning grounds. Saw bUl ducks and eagles were also offenders. He suggested that a bounty be placed on aU these. Other proposals made were: That there be no weekly closed season for trailers as the average trolling at Hippo Island is 18 days out of each month and at Langara Island, 20 days. . That all trailers be allowed only six lines each and that all dogs for floating lines be done away with. That trolling on the Queen Charlotte Islands open on March 1 and close October 31. That the association uphold the demand of the Salmon Fishermen's Protective Association of Vancouver that all fisheries inspectors and fisheries patrol men be Canadians and have 50 per cent practical knowledge of the fisheries, 36 per cent educational qualifications and 25 per cent scientific. J. Oreen asked what' the department was doing in regard to patrolling Queen Charlotte Island waters against poaching of Amerloan trailers and if any patrol was to be placed on the West Coast. Mr. Oteen also enquired why the Inspector of fisheries telegraphed applicants for the position of ies Inspector for the south end of the Queen Charlotte Islands to ZAMBUK Clears. The Skin Of ECZEMA & RASH Mr. Valley was congratulated for the splendid work he had done on behalf of the Northern B. C. Salmon Fishermen's Association. T. B. MAC Al LAY President.
