FIRST-CLASS OAFE A La Carte, THE DAILY NEWs AND SEWERS New System Advocated by Mayor and Engineer Asked for Report. The sewer question came in for a good deal of discussion at last night's council meeting. The mat- ter arose from the reading of a letter from David H, Hays, in which he stated that the matter was really serious and that the city had been criminally negligent in not having it repaired. The condition of the Second Avenue sewer had been known for a long|-« time and it was a risk to the r| dirt is visible EE Na TA AT ALT AL health of people in the nevighbor- hood, Some of Mr. Hays’ tenants had threatened to leave his build- ing if something was not done and he had decided to hold the city liable for any loss he might sustain through this condition. The city engineer, who present, was asked to report on the matter. He said that the board of works knew of the con- dition some time ago and it had been with a view to There was a lot in the manhole at Mr. corner but there was no movement so it was judged that the sewer must be blocked some- where. With a view to finding block a tunnel had been driven through the retaining wall below the manhole and the city workmen were at present tracing the sewer pipes and hoped to lo- cate the trouble and have it remedied in the course of a day In the meantime the de- partment was doing its best. Found Boulders. On inquiry being made if ay- thing had been found so far which might have blocked the sewer, Mr. Clements replied that aliyeady 12 boulders and a ehunk of wood had been taken out. There was no account of how they would get in the sewer. Ald. Perry ask- ed if the sewers were ever thushed was discussed remedying it. of water Hays’ this or 80, and the mayor replied that this was not now necessary, the rain- fall being considered suflicient flush. Ald, Perry asked that some disinfectant be put around the Hays Block as his otlices were there and he knew the situation. He had even considered moving his own offices from there. New System. The mayor*stated that the only cure for a lot of the present sewer troubles in the city would be the installation df a new and heavier trunk systenr It would money, but it was necessary and had to be done some time. It was not an expenditure that could be avoided, Ald Casey felt that it would be a wise thing to have the city engineer make a report on plans for a new sewer system s¢« ihe matter could be considered and steps be taken in some such direction. cost PRINCE GEORGE Ihe Fraser River is beginning 40 freeze over and last Saturday the steamer B. C, Express made her, last trip of the season. She took 90 tons of freight for Ques- nel, After she has made this trip an effort will be made to pull the B. xX.” off the bar which she struck some weeks ago.
