PATTULLO Vancouver Province Comments Editorially on His Rumored .Move to Federal Fi;Id j The maples are budding down by I the banks of the Ottawa, r.nd spring lis astir where lately winter was overlord, and up on Parliament Hill (the politicians have heard the j pleasant call of fresh fields, says , a Vancouver Province editorial. ,They have heard another call as well, it ceems, and there Is no pro-! phet now so cautious that he will not tell you to expect an .election when the ides of July are conie. Mr. Dunning has brought down his budget, and Mr. Mackenzie King Is talking about a new cabinet portfolio and these are sure signs, so the pundits say, that the national welkin will soon be ringing with the cries of the party gladiators. We must not turn a blind eye to these distant signals, but what about a sign or two nearer home? What, for Instance about the latest story concerning Mr. Pattullo, leader of the Liberal opposition In our own legislature? I The latest story is that Mr. Pattullo has fixed the desire of his I heart upon Ottawa. He is going to I leave us if he can, they say, and he Is going down to the capital, to gladden the hearts of the lawmakers there with his eloquence and his sartorial distinction. He has almost been persuaded, so the story poes, that his "entry of a wider sphere would greatly enhance the local Liberal prospects." Strong efforts, we are further assured, will be put forth by the Orand Old Party, In order to Induce Mr. Pattullo to become "Ottawa-minded." t seems that if only Mr. Eattullo nan be quite persuaded, It will be all over, practically, but the shouting. It Is a very Interesting story, and 7e hardly know what to say about It. It finds us with those well-known singled feelings with which we hear that we may shortly have to bid goodbye to an old friend. Per haps, In a certain contingency, we night bear up in the consolation ; hat our loss was Ottawa's gain. But suppose it shouldn't work out that vray. Suppose we lost Mr. Pattullo, and Ottawa didn't get him. The sovereign electorate Is apt to be so wrong-headed in these matters. uppose Mr. Pattullo Is duly per suaded to throw up his provincial constituency of Prince Rupert, and to enter the federal lists in some riding of Greater Vancouver and then suppose that the obfuscated electorate refuses to give up Mr. Stevens or Mr. Ladner or some other wicked Tory, and to take on with the good Mr. Pattullo. It is a dreadful thought, and it dims our Joy in the springtime, and it dis tracts our mind painfully from the proper consideration of Mr. Dun- ning's budget. Our friend 'Mr. Pattullo, like a great many of our political friends, never takes our advice, and so we shall not presume to advise him in this great decision. But anybody may indulge in a hope, even about a man as sure of his destiny as Mr. Pattullo, and we do really hope that Mr. Pattullo will not do any t hing rash. We hope he will remem ber at least how badly we shall all feel about it, in case he should leave us to start for Ottawa, and Call For Supper Is A mWK if A Call ror 2-;CoHcc As'lt Should iicffiSM THE DAILY NEWS Bowel and Bladder Trouble for Years. It is a mine of vitamines always available, easily grown at home and always In the market. It is training diet for health. While lettuce Is used as a cooked vegetable by those who have tried it as a cooked "greens" this use Is practically unknown In America. Lettuce is to be eaten raw. It is most valuable so used. It Is the commonest salad material either In j itself or as a garnish for other sal-ids. Lettuce contains the four vita- j mines. A. B. C and D. all having an ; important function in the maintenance of health. It makes no difference whether it it head or leaf lettuce that is used, the vitamines are there. While head lettuce has dls--ilaced the old-fashioned leaf varieties to a large extent, connols-urs sometimes Insist that the leaf varieties have more and better flavor and a more characteristic .'lavor of lettuce than the head varieties. The leaf varieties are the most, easily 'grown in the garden and give the earliest crop. They should not be despised. Orown In rich sol) 11 in the cool days of early spring the t quality is as fine as that of head' lettuce. They give a crop before the head lettuce cornea into bearing. Everybody should plant a row of leaf lettuce for the early fresh home salad crop. The old-fashioned method of serving it was with vinegar and sugar. Then next in popularity was j wilting it with fat from fried bacon '. with a little vinegar, and lastly the French dressing of oil, tarragon vinegar and paprika or other condi ments added at flavor. No matter i how it Is served the green leaves of lettuce furnish vitamines. There are two standbys of the highest quality In the leaf type of lettuce, the Grand Rapids and the black seeded Simpson.
