PROBLEM OF INDIA Canadians who get part of their news of the world through the United States, must learn to take with a grain of wit the tales that come through in regard to the condition of India. While the majority, consisting of Hindus, are said to be in favor of either complete independence of dominion status, the native state, with seventy millions, are opposed to anything but British control and so are the Mohammedans which number approximately another seventy millions and the outcasts, "untouchables or depressed classes. Of these there are over forty millions. The Sikhs, who have so often fought under the Bri tish flag are also opposed to the proposed Gandhist change. Religion is the great controlling factor in India.. There li.ave been in the past many conflicts of raco and religion and it is only the British force backed by the knowledge that under British rule they will get justice, that the various factions are held back. DOMINION STATUS The facile phrase. "Dominion Status," never ought to have been used in connection with India. Prom any standpoint which regards the maWftttue1 bT the problem and the "clenched antagonisms" ir contains, that phrase is unworthy of India, and infmitery'HUaTeaMing if its effect upon superficial opinion in Britain. There is no analogy whatever with the Dominions. There problems are of an elementary .simplicity by comparison.
